NRHS Convention and WV Rails

This June will present two opportunities to see big steam at special events.

On June 21-26, we have the annual NRHS Convention this year at Scranton, PA. The event will feature events such as a rare mileage trip to Sunbury behind authentic diesels, short visits to tourist railroads, a trip with Alcos and steam to the Delaware Water Gap, and a long mainline trip behind R&N 425.

On June 25-27, there is also WV Rails. In celebration of 100 years of the original B&O tracks being built, there will be festivities in Petersburg, WV. The event will feature two tank engines (one for regular trips and one that you can operate), and also the WMSR 734. The 734 will be featured on one leg of an excursion on Friday and Sunday. Also on Saturday, there will be a diesel excursion. There are expected to be many diesels in South Branch Valley paint along with B&O, C&O and even Chessie.

So, is anyone going to try to attend one of these events? I personally am trying to find a way to squeeze them together. Leave it to that, the too biggest steam events in the East are on the same weekend.

Either way, both look like good events. Hope to see you down the line

joneau i saw something in trains magizine about this year NRHS convention at steamtown.

I am staring at the WV Rails now and I'm sure If I could forget video games and put my money that I will have saved up toward trains... Driver a Tank Engine for 20 minutes, Ride the train down in the morning, three days of train loving.. If Only it wasn't on the other side of WV.

Yes, I saw it too. However, it provided no new details about the event, so it really only served for people without regular internet access

I just made my move on the Night Photo Session, and the two spots on the Sunday Excursion aren't far behind.

are you a big READING & NORTHERN 425 FAN?

No way am I a BIG 425 fan. I do respect the R&N and the steam crew for bringing the engine back to life and running it throughout the year. That, and for having a sense of humor for the many people who criticize it for doing things that every steam program has to do in this day of liability.

It does have one small nickname in my book: The "Reading Rainbow"

So what am I a fan of? If it runs trains, it's on my list. There is no "better" place because the tourist railroad market is not competitive amongst itself. No tourist railroad claims to be better than others, as the main deciding factor for people showing up is how close the place is to their house. No need to compete, as they're just in the business because they love historical trains and run the business to break even to run next year. Plain and simple

for the 425 restoration was some of the work send to STRASBURG?

Nope, all the work was done at the Reading & Northern shops and done by their steam crew.

And don't say "strasburg sh00d hav dun teh work on 425" either. The R&N folks know what they're doing with 425, and I would be willing to put money down that the 425 will be running for many years to come.

Anyway, my hopes of getting to both events is simple. Saturday's excursion with 425 is one way to Port Clinton. On Sunday at Romney, diesels will lead an excursion to Petersburg. The two locations are about 3.5 hours from each other. It's not a huge stretch, that's for sure. But we'll see

just wondering is the 425 heavy weght engine it can run on the strasburg tracks besides STRASBURG tracks can hold 90. can hold the 425?

The 425 is NOT a heavy(weight) engine! It is a light Pacific! That, and neither Strasburg nor R&N has any reason to bring 425 to the Strasburg Railroad. It just won't happen!
