No support for Joystick?

NYCboy

gettin bored of trainz
I cant seem to find a JOystick edit option any where in trainz 2009. How do you edit the keys and axels in trainz for a joystick? Does trainz even support 3rd party joysticks?

I do not think Trainz supports joysticks, as there are simply WAY too many controls for a joystick to handle.

RailDriver units are the exception, they are made for train simulation games.

THERE IS NONE
But what you can do if you wish is look for a thrid party application that converts the joystick inputs into keyboard inputs. This works did it years ago as a one off.

But its still quite unfair, Look at flight simulator X. You can use any joeypad with it and set it up for the axels and buttons through the game. Trainz is already into its 13th year, and they cant add support for other joypads?

You can run a flight sim with a joystick, because not many keystrokes are required. On my Raildriver, I have 28 buttons, 4 levers, multiple switches. this would be impossible to do on any joystick I have ever used.

and how does it make sense to control a train with a joystick?

Some of the narrow gauge cane locomotive used in Australia are driven by a joystick built into the arm rest on the drivers seat - power one axis - braking the other

I personally would love to see Joystick Midi and HID device support. This would allow people who do a lot of modding or wish to build their own cab to interface with the software. Trainz primary competitor does have joystick support and it is useful for setting reverser throttle breaks and operate horns and lights. I find it more relaxing in the competitors sim to drive longer routes and manage speed. I would buy a rail driver but I think for 200 I could come up with a better home brew if this had HID or Midi Support. Korg makes a midi control that has 9 pots 9 faders and 18 bottons and costs 40 dollars. It also supports 4 layers of control. I could run an entire layout simultaneously with the proper control. Another idea was using a midi control to make a sort of breadboard for switches that I could set up the sort of control panels I made when I had when I had enough room for a HO layout. Then with a breadboard matrix design I could move the switches around. Another idea would be to make a driver touch control for ipad and along with a custom hid driver allow you to control the switches and dispatch via a ipad or other tablet device. A little beyond my capabilities but wouldn't it open up possibilities?

I'm not sure why one would want to use a joystick, however, I would think it would be easy to do. I think the confusion is that the result would not be very prototypical.

Most joysticks are programmable via Control Panel, others have special programs for customization. So, the Trainz W-X keys could be matched to power up - power down equivalent on joystick. The F-R Keys could be matched to forward-back axis on joystick, etc. If you really want to do this I'm guessing it would take a half hour to hour of effort to do the programming.

Essentially Rail Driver does the same thing, but presents it in a more prototypical way (at least for "Desktop Diesels" not console variety or steam).

Hope this helps.

Hello NYCboy,

Have a look a this thread ( http://forums.auran.com/trainz/show...-gamepad-with-Trainz-2009&highlight=belgian46 ) which I started in 2010.

I tried to use my gamepad ( not a joystick ) in combination with trainz and a software program.

It's not the perfect solution, but it is useable. I stopped searching for the perfect solution, because I started with the building of 2 routes. I'm still busy with those routes. Never tried my joystick in combination with Trainz, because my joystick simply is not made for any trainz action.

But if your joystick is a combination joystick/gamepad, the above thread could be useful.

Regardless if if using joypads is irrelevent with trainz, I still think trainz need this. Why do other train sims support it but not this? I have a throttle quadtrant, So i would love to use one for power, dyn brake, and ind brake, and other buttons for reversers and what not, and as mentioned in an earlier post, since rail driver has the command of the train sim joypads market they can set up what ever price they want. I under stand about setting up levers to do keystrokes, but it simply wont be realistic. A game running this long should add a long wanted things.

Hello NYCboy,

Well, you have an option. Do some testing with the mapping software ( X-padder, Joytokey, ... ) in combination with your throttle quadtrant and your Trainz versions and perhaps you get the result you want.

I was sceptical when RSC added XBox Controller support to Railworks but I have found myself tending to use it, as you can tilt back in the chair rather than hunch over the keyboard. It's not suitable for more complex motive power (such as steam locos) but so far as running a basic train is concerned I'm surprised N3V haven't looked at programming it in, if only to keep up with the competition! Maybe they will surprise us in TRS2014...

My PS2 pame pads have 14 buttons and 2 sticks (4 directions each)...seems quite suited to DCC Mode operations :D ...Ah, more projects...

I would like a joystick option so I can brew my own controller using a low cost joystick hid interface like these.
http://www.ultimarc.com/a-pac.html but with no support mapping at all you cut out the DIY guys completely. I have access to real train controls why would I want one made of plastic when I can make my own cab. Can you at least release the protocols for the raildriver so maybe I can brew one up using ardruino? YOUR COMPETITORS HAVE JOYSTICK SUPPORT just saying....
