No mention of Amtrak at all....

Comparing Amtrak to those "7 train trips of a lifetime" would be about like comparing hamburgers-at-McDonalds to dining at the top 7 gourmet restaurants in the world!

And I'm not slamming Amtrak at all, having been a happy Amtrak passenger many times and, hopefully, will be again in the future. It's just on a different scale of experience, not even close.

I keep telling my wife that we'll ride the 6+ days-long Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Vladivostok (the REAL Trans-Sib, not the Golden Eagle) when I retire. She tells me I'm bonkers. :hehe:

Even I'll admit if money was not an issue and I could pick one train to take here in North America, it wouldn't be an Amtrak train. It soul have to be VIA's Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver. My second choice would be either the Acela or the Cascades. But if we're going internationally, Amtrak just wouldn't make the cut, even for me.

He has a point, I love Amtrak but it is like comparing a Ford to a Rolls-Royce

Overlooking Amtrak and it's strengths and weaknesses, also consider that not one "private" excursion from America made it on this short list.

Based on my personal experience, Amtrak does a good job of recreating the rail travel experience of the '60s. Take a plane and make your pictures on the side trips via taxi or rental car.

most, if not all, private excursions aren't run by Amtrak. They're run by a separate entity which just rents a train from Amtrak & trackage rights from the host railroad.

There was the American Orient Express which used mostly older rolling stock, but I read recently it was bankrupt. I saw it once at the Grand canyon station and it looked really sweet.

Some of those trips look interesting although I'm wondering how the train gets up to Machu Pichu. I thought you had to hike up there. I can't imagine the Indian Pacific or the Ghan making the list unless you like desert! The New Zealand TransAlpine and Taleri Gorge are great trips although only a day long.

One of my daughters wants to do the Siberian trip. And she has hiked up to Machu Pichu.
