nightmare downloading

I tried to download a file for a route from the download station - it was a massive file of 327 parts - are they all that big ?

Ended up cancelling, and could not run the game at all !

Had to re-install the game as a result - OK now

I am better of keeping whatever is on Trainz 2004 - however limited it is - but there should be some things to play as there are 2 installation discs

Downloading seems a bit dangerous to me !

Because it depicts a complete 3D world, Trainz has to have a complicated hierarchy of assets. If you try to download something at the top of the hierarchy, DLS will automatically download all the dependencies first and work upwards. Some items at the top can have hundreds of dependencies.

For example, and this list is far from complete:
Scenarios and Driver sessions use layouts and rolling stock and perhaps HTML assets.
Layouts use ground textures, vegetation, buildings, track, bridges, tunnels, signals, speed limit signs and many other items.
Rolling stock always uses bogies (trucks in US English).
Powered rolling stock uses enginespecs, enginesounds, hornsounds and perhaps pantographs.
And so it goes on.

Try downloading something very simple to begin with, like a tree, which has no dependencies. This will test your configuration and let you see how the process works. Then perhaps move on to an unpowered rolling stock item such as a freight wagon which will usually only have a few dependencies.

An additional problem is when some of the dependencies an asset needs aren't on DLS. Finding those can be very frustrating but you can always ask here if you need help.

Also,

Many downloads will show a "Pack" and/or a list of dependencies , look at these prior to downloading , sometimes you can pre-determine if this might be something you are interested in spending download time or not ?

I was just the same when I joined in April. But there is no need to worry about it being dangerous. This is the safest site I know. I was first advised to get an FCT, this helped with the download speed and is worth every penny. I also installed paint shed and Trainz Objectz. You will find as I did that this community will help you in any way they can. All that is asked is that you follow the CoC and don't demand things. Always be polite and the help you need will always be there. You can never ask to many questions, but it is advisable to use the search button first in case a problem has been asked before.

Hi spammu,

If available time is a problem for you, you can use your 'Download Cart'.
Check the 'List of Dependencies', available packs Etc and place them in your 'Cart'
These will be saved and you can download at your leisure.

SNIP Downloading seems a bit dangerous to me !

Downloading from this site is completely safe. I have been downloading for years, sometimes (to speed up the process) I have even switched off my Anti-Virus. Not recommended I know, but I've never had a problem.

Cheers
Pete.

Hi
can I just add to the above by saying that a First Class Ticket from Auran will only speed up your downloads if you are on broadband.
It bypasses the speed cap that Auran put on.

nothing in the known universe will speed up dial-up:hehe:

cheers
Roy
