Yup out of my wallet. Its freeware or nothin for me. Simply can't afford wasting money. Ah well i'll just make my own.

...donationware...is healthy...

8) The way I look at it, first is that since I enjoy the study of the Diesel-electric locomotive, as pertaining to my interests in Diesel engines, train simulation gives a wonderful platform from which to study locomotives from the operations standpoint.

I like driving, not just watching multiple trains I have dispatched, and making sure everything works, using this RailDriver Desktop Controller, hear in front of me, purchased solely because it gives easier control over braking.

I have several rolling stock projects I've been working on forever, self trained, using gmax and whatever learning resource I have managed to download, and buy off Amazon.

My estimation, is once I have learned these processes, it should take at least 40 hrs per item I wish to create.

If time is money, then I can see why others wish to seek compensation for time, website support, expensive graphics programs(although that's up to the content creator), etc.

To me just supporting a website with which to acquire content, makes it worth a few dollars, as long as the site takes PayPal.

I've said many times, the rising price of scrap aluminum, copper, etc, more than supplies enough spending money for goodies like these!

And for the younger set, earning money brings respect and support for most any project you wish to begin...if it's worth it for you to spend time productively, you deserve reward!

Backyard, what you had to say was very well put.

Yes, there are alot of expenses and hours put into our creations. For example this NS set, like our other payware, is actually four different projects in one. The main mesh, lod mesh, cab view and trucks. Then you have the skinning process which can take just as long. I do choose to have additional expenses when making these like for instance I bought a font for these so that the NS numbers would look accurate because the ones we had just didn't cut it for me. I also on occasion purchase microscale decals when I need complex graphics or hard to find logos and fonts. The biggest expense turns out to be buying accurate scaled drawings for these models. I could use the ones found on the web but they are really not correct for the most part so that is a choice as an expense. Alot of the mainline modeler drawings also come with close up photo spreads of shots you just couldn't get on the web or in books so to me these are essentials.

Mainline Modeler...I subscribed to that once...

8) I used to enjoy Cindy Winters work...she did a SP SD39, and later a NS Dash 9 40C, spartan cab.

I don't know whatever happened to her, I left model railroading long ago.

Yes, MM, has much to offer for research(back issues, for money), We were always amused, a Southern Scale Models, in Acworth, of how much research was done, and no one ever did the work to produce the models.

And that's another thing. Producing an NS SD38 in HO scale costs about US$150.∞.

It's much cheaper, to model in TRS, but not by much!

Awaiting release...

I tried to start my own thread on payware vs. freeware but apparently it got shut down. Has it been that bad in the past? I am a newcomer afterall. It seemed like a simple question. Anyway before I get arrested for "disturbing the peace" how many of the SD38's does Norfolk Southern have?

Sureshot could probably answer this better than me but these diesels are inherited from Conrail. I assume the total is divided between NS and CSX. Surprisingly both companies have repainted alot of them and with that in mind we will be covering them all. CSX dark future and patched over Conrail Quality in both CSX and NS/PRR. It's also interesting to note that these units have no ditch lights.

in my opinion, its sort of sad to see that almost everything created for trainz anymore, that has not already been done, is payware. I would rather have a million low quality freeware locomotives then a single ultra high detail fully realistic payware one.

but then again, I have created both 3D content for trainz as well as routes. It took me a full year to finish Timber Ridge, and would I like money for it, sure, but its enough for me to know that people are enjoying it (and bug free none the less)

I guess it just depends on how you feel. I just enjoy hearing that people enjoy my content, thats all I need at the end of the day

RRMods has a ton of highly detailed freeware content and I don't think it is sad at all to want to charge for few even better detailed models. It's also better to get something unique to trainz than to just send in a donation.

In my opinion I think that both the locomotives in this thread are very highly detailed, and pretty darn good. If i had deeper pockets, I would gladly shell out the money for this or anything else that pertains to the layouts on my game.

I also think that when you spend loads of money, time and effort into a product, it's perfectly fine to ask for a few bucks in return for a piece of quality equipment. I'd rather have detailed models in my game that costed a few bucks each than a bunch of free junk (such as my reskins (puke)). I think I'll eventually have enough money and time on my hands to create a 3d masterpiece, and then I'll be able to use great content like this. I already have most of the free items from RRmods, and it's pretty darn good. I'll eventually purchase these SD's, I don't care how long I wait.

There's my two cents
Sam

In the end, I agree. It depends on who you are. I'm a conservative, humanitarion soldier (cadet) so I see the joy on someone's face when they recieve an important item in their life. I do however see the fact that sometimes shelling out a few bucks is not all that bad, but for my content it is freeware.

Also is there such a thing as the GP28 and GP/SD39-2 OR GP/SD39E?

As for NS they have 20 of these and in CSX they have 2 most of them are SD38-2s which i am sure we will cover. NS has only 1 SD38-2.

You guys do awesome work.

When i saw NS SD38's i got really excited. You can take a guess where the 3808 in my name came from :D. That engine was "my other vehicle" for about a month when i worked for NS. She was old, but never once did we need to cut the slug in. Oh, and she was still painted Conrail blue back then (and no air conditioner! :p). Ah, the memories :).

The 3800, 3805, 3808 were the yard engines at NS's yard in Allentown, PA. At some point the 3808 left and was replaced by the 3807. I don't know what's there now.
