Hello, I'm new to this site and noticed that the Download Manager has over 200K "available downloads". Do I truly need all of these files in order to see new maps and to join multi-player layouts and work with other crews. I did the one on the main page called updates, but now I was wondering about the DS area and whether I have to choose all of these and download them.

Thanks for the replies!!!!

Hi yleekylote,

Welcome to the addictive world of Trainz.

If you use the Content Manager that came with TS12, or use the Download Helper from the DS web page, to download a session from the DS, it will automatically find and download all the DS assets that you will need but do not already have. This will normally include the layout/route, all scenery and rolling stock items, any rules and other specialised assets. Likewise, if you download a layout/route, it will find and download all the scenery, rolling stock, etc. The only exceptions will be where layout/session creators have used assets from 3rd party web sites that will not be on the DS. It can be a pain to track down these 3rd part assets as many posts in these forums will attest.

Many (most??) of the 200k available downloads will be for earlier versions of Trainz and most of those will not work on TS12 (athough assets for TS2009 and TS2010 should work) so there is no point in trying to download them all - although there are some "Trainzers" who have done just that - its a pride thing!

Sorry to contradict you Peter but it's not true to say that many/most downloads for versions earlier that 2009 will not work in TS12. I agree that a percentage won't work without being "repaired" and that some will not work at all, but there are still a lot of assets out there that will work. Incidentally the built in TS12 routes have a good few assets for versions earlier than 2.9.

As Trainz has developed techniques for asset construction have, generally speaking, improved so where alternatives are available always try to download assets with later build numbers (that is build version 2.9 or later). If the only available copy of item you want is for a build earlier than 2.9 then you can still download it - if it shows faulty then simply delete it from you local list and nothing lost.

yleekiyote - what Peter has said about downloading assets along with routes is correct. Do not download every available asset just because you can, just download what you need (having a large number of assets locally may affect Trainz performance).

Welcome to Trainz and the forums.

Chris

I stand corrected.

yleekylote - In Content Manager you do not need to download all the updates (out of date tab), these are updates for everything on the dls, you only need the updates for those on your computer. You can find these by setting up a search in Content Manager using the criteria:

Location = Local
plus
Out of date = True

Clicking on the save button will install a tab so that you can quickly go to these when in Content Manager.

Hey, I appreciate all the help guys. I know that this game offers a multi player mode and I didn't know if some of these layouts would need to be downloaded from the DS (as that what I thought it stood for), so I am just trying to learn the ropes...or the rails!

Thanks again!

Welcome to Trainz. For multi-player routes you need to download the session of a route that someone is running
and the ones that runs the most is UMR By clewis65 and MRL by colorlight.
Most MP route users use Team Speak 3 to communicate with while running a session. TS is free @ teamspeak3.com
