New to Trainz

I have been using MSTS till date and was pretty happy with it. Yeah I was long overdue for an upgrade.

so i went ahead and bought the 2010 engineers' edition from steam (its the gaming platform i've been using for quite a few years now, and frankly having all my games under one roof makes sense and it reduces the patching hassles). yeah i couldve got the 2012 edition, but i wasnt sure of my GT 525M's capability of running it. 2010 perfectly fit the system requirements.

i was hoping to get a lead on how to proceed since i presume the real fun lies in the additional content.

thanks and glad to be a part of the community now!

Are you aware that the Steam version does have a few potential issues?

Firstly, you will not be able to participate in the multiplayer beta, unless a patch has finally been released for the Steam version.

Secondly, you will also not be able to use certain downloadable content.

Apart from that, you should be OK.

Welcome to the forums, hopefully if you do run into issues, someone here will be able to assist you in solving it. For example, I usually deal with the technical side of it, have a look at my tutorial website if you want to know what I mean.

there is a GB of patching happening with the steam download of Trainz (initial download was around 5GB) so i'll have to check how that goes. never had a issue with patching though, hopefully the developers will release the patch on steam soon.

thanks for the link to ur tutorials!

It's OK - my tutorials have been known to help a lot of users in the past.

Also, you may find my sticky thread in the General Trainz forum (Updating DirectX 9.0C - How to do it) useful as well.

It's best to stick with getting DLCs from the same place you bought the game from, from a compatibility/ease of use point of view (which in your case is Steam)

Just out of interest, what operating system are you running?

Windows 7 64 bit.

And these are the rest of the specs:

Core i5 2410M, Nvidia GT 525M 1GB, 4GB DDR3 RAM.

Looks OK to me.

The only thing you will need to do, and my tutorial website can help with this, is making sure that you have Trainz running as administrator. This will help avoid issues later on regarding items not appearing in game. (You will need to apply the steps given on the site onto the shortcut for the Steam Client)

Another thing you may encounter is that only a small amount of routes are shown at the start. On the Routes page there is a gold star. Clicking this will turn off the favourites feature and allow you to use the full selection.

okay. will do that once the patching is done. thanks again! :)

initial thoughts

just wanted to pen down my initial thoughts regarding trainz 2010. i believe there is a lot of misconstrued prejudice regarding the series prevailing among many who arent using trainz (some of which I admit I had). so this comes from a new trainz user and a novice in the trainz genre as well. I've played MSTS (thoroughly) so far and tinkered with railworks 2 and 3 for a few hours. so the trainz fanboy tag cant really be applied to me. this is primarily aimed at people who are still having second thoughts about trainz.

1. Graphics - I thiink many, if not most, in the train lovers' category believe that one of the primary flaws of trainz is its graphics. I was hence hoping for the worst when I launched the game.

To my surprise, I found the graphics to be okay. Its not nearly as bad as most people claim it to be. The trains look amazing and are quite detailed.

This should clear things up for new users who, like me, think trainz has terrible graphics.

It clearly doesnt.

Also, the biggest advantage of Trainz is that you can select the highest resolution and still have FPS of around 60 throughout the game, even with a mid range graphics card like mine (Nvidia GT 525M), unlike Railworks 2 and 3 where the FPS is horrendous, even on high end computers, to say the least (from personal experience).

However there are a few glitches/flaws. The textures are a serious drawback in trainz. Everything apart from the trains look a bit 2000-ish. Being a fan of Half Life 1, I can say that some of the graphics elements do look a bit like the early 2000s game.

I for one had some serious difficulty in identifying this specie:

BUT this is not a dealbreaker. And I'll tell you why...

2. Gameplay - I think this is clearly one of the strongest areas in trainz. And the developers have exploited it to the fullest. The gameplay is interactive, the environment isnt just scenery and plays an active part in whatever you do. The industries arent picture perfect but they are very much a part of the game. This is something the other sims dont really have. Even the brilliant and still contemporary MSTS doesnt have such a massive interactive environment. It will take one a long, long time to "complete" all the routes. And the track changes are like puzzles at places, so there is a lot of "gameplay" involved. Its not just about driving the trains and admiring the scenery around you.

3. Audio - I'll be frank, I was disappointed. The absence of Doppler effect (now included in Trainz 2012, even though a bit 'crudely', judging from the youtube videos) is really a letdown. MSTS had this and even now, in 2011, that feature still manages to impress me. The overall audio in the game is sort of okay-ish. I can't really add any other adjectives.

Final thoughts? I'll go ahead and say it out loud, even with its flaws, Trainz is still the best train sim at present. The PC optimisation (giving you proper above-40 fps at all times even on mid range graphics cards) and gameplay makes this a winner. Unless the other games clean up their PC optimisation and gameplay issues, its wise to stick with Trainz as its the only "proper", playable train sim out there right now.

Sounds a very reasonable review to me.

I can tell you though that there are higher-resolution textures available on the Download Station, which can be accessed either by clicking Download Station above, or by using Content Manager.

You may be able to improve the textures further by altering video card settings.

I agree regarding the sounds, although it is usually up to the asset creator to a certain extent on how they want the sounds to sound like, within the constraints of the Trainz sound system.

If there is anything you do need help with though, you are welcome to create a thread about it, and someone will hopefully be able to assist you in solving the problem.

Just out of interest, did you make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card and DirectX files? I have a sticky thread about DirectX updating in the General Trainz forum, as well as links to the relevant graphics card update pages (for the major graphics card makers) on the Useful Links page on my tutorial website.

Just replying to this bit, as it's nearly 11:30pm here :)

That's Dukey, the late dog of a Trainzer named Davie_UCF. For quite some time, Dukey was the unofficial maskot for Trainz :)

It should be remembered though that much of the content available for Trainz (and most items included in Trainz these days) are 3rd party created items, and as such the look of the items will vary quite a bit. Many items do also date back to earlier versions, since many content/route builders look for a 'suitable' (but not always the most detailed, or to current standards) item for a particular situation. As such, the 'quality' of the items can vary quite a bit.

i have the latest directx 11 and driver files, although the program is using opengl at the moment by default.

will have to check download station. thanks!

Trainz uses DirectX 9, not DirectX 11, although the two can (and do) run side-by-side.

You will need to check that seperately.

My thread in the General Trainz forum will make sure you have the latest version.
