G’Day All, I’m new to Trainz but not to train simulations as I have been using MSTS for quite sone time (and not about to laeve it) Trainz is different and they both have things unique to them.
I have started Trainz as a friend gave me the Ultimate Collection and TS2004 as a gift. I have already loaded UTC and played it, I enjoyed it but keyboard controls are very different, can you customize them?
I will load up TS2004 soon but can both the contents be combined? If so how?
Oh well another learning curve but I will get there.
Regards
Barrie

Hi Barrie,
Welcome to Trainz. I note that you have already used UTC and are contemplating trying TRS2004. You ask if the UTC stuff can be used in 04 and the answer is generally yes as Trainz follows a backwards compatability that goes for many of the later versions, for assets you wish to transfer. Having said that you should know that later versions get progressively more reluctant to accept errors that might exist and could cause the item to not function correctly when ported over. And it must be said that assets created for newer versions most likely won't work in older versions. This is part of the reason a lot of people still create using 04 as versions from there on are able to use these items.
After all that you will probably find yourself using 04 more and UTC less once you get 04 started as it is a great starting point if you wish to "do your own thing". Good luck with what ever you choose.

Cheers
Russell.

UTC version of Trainz only provides basic Model Railroad simulation capability i.e. besides the included layouts, you can create textured topography with scenery items and you can place trains on them and run them.
Much more capability is provided in TRS2004 and includes:
Troto Type Operation
Interactive Industries that create and consume products
Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can drive your trains without your help
Interactive Passengers with operating passenger car doors

The original issue of TRS2004 had lots problems but was finally fixed after four separate updates, so you need to make sure that you have SP4 installed. The final build is 2365.

G'Day Russell, Bob & Martin, thanks for the replys and yes I hope to have some fun with this. Just one quick question, you takked about "porting over" how is this done?

Hi Barrie,

Moving assets between versions ("porting over" in this case) can vary quite a bit depending on where they're going to and coming from! As an example moving from 04 to 06 is usually done via Content Management Program (CMP) in 06 and involves importing the 04 asset, then committing it into the 06 database. Going the other way, if it is possible, involves finding the asset in the 06 database via CMP and making it a CDP (Content Dispatcher Packet/Package) and copying it into the folder/directory in 04 called World/Dispatcher and then removing the appropriate (someone jump in here????) chump file so that the new asset will be recognized in 04! Remember that often newer assets won't work in older versions correctly but sometimes all it takes is to edit the config file to show the correct build. As I don't have anything more recent than 06 on my computer I cannot say for certain that this is how it is done for newer versions but it is probably close. However it is better to move from an older version to a newer one.
It all sounds quite involved for a newcomer but there are others who do this sort of thing very often and with a lot of success adding to their "stock" so a little practice is usually all it takes to learn the method you need.
Hope this helps.

Cheers
Russell.

After adding a new asset to TRS2004 you have to delete the ..TRS2004\Cache\world_cache_dispatcher.chump file to let TRS2004 know it is there. The file will rebuild when you start TRS2004/Trainz.

Thanks for that Bob, I can never remember which one to remove. Don't do it often enough, I guess.

Cheers
Russell.
