Hi everyone, I'm totally new to the Trainz world and I have a few questions about where to start. so far I've just played the Trainz 2006 demos but I can see theres alot of different games available.

so where do I start? Should I be looking at 2006 or 2009? what exactly is Trainz Driver?

how many routes are currently available for 2009?

being from canada, im mostly interested in Canadian/US routes.

thanks in advance!

Greetings

Firstly, Welcome to the forums Ghostdogsamurai. I am using TRS2006 at the moment, and I think I'll move to TS2009 later on. I'm happy with 06 and I recommend it because it is very simple to use. It was a big step forward from the Original Trainz I got for my tenth birthday (my uncle never ceases to spoil me:hehe: ) and now I have TC 1&2 (Trainz Classics, also recommended by me.) And remember, as you're new to the forums, it will take some time for people to get to know you, so be patient. Once again, welcome to the friendly Trainz Community.

Hi gds, welcome to the forums.

i would stick with TRS06 for the moment. It is comparatively stable and had most of the bugs fixed, or at least plenty help on the forum for those that aren't. I would guess that at least 97% of the total content available works in TRS06. There are plenty of USA routes available, and an almost bottomless supply of rolling stock.

Doubtless someone will be along in a minute to trumpet the virtues of 09...

Andy ;)

Ready? Okay, first there's the...uh...no, you can do that with 2006 as well.

But what about the...oh really? Yes I guess that is an advantage for 2006!

Don't forget though, with 2009 you can...I didn't realize that...2006 you say?

What about all the new...Only about a half dozen? And most are crap? I see.

Nope, I would stay with 2006 if I were you. I'm even sticking with it if I were me!;)

Welcome to the forums GDS,

I have TRS06 and TS2009. when i used TRS06 i had no patches for it and it worked fine for me. Since recently getting TS2009 i have two patches on it and really i had no problem when it didn't have the patches. And so far TS2009 is really working for me. As for the US/Canadian routes there are alot of them on the DLS (download station). And all the routes from TRS04 and TRS06 work in TS2009.

Cheers,
Kai

TRS2009 includes the built in content from TRS2006. TRS2009 gives better frame rates or needs a lower powered machine than TRS2006 on the same layout. It also uses texture compression which effectively quadruples the amount of memory on your video card and can make use of more than one core.

Note that because Trainz is open ended and the content is created by end users some content can bring any machine to its knees.

TrainzPro Routes have their own site and probably have some layouts that will be of interest to you.

Each version of Trainz varies a little in its requirements for content. So some TRS2004 content will not run in TRS2006 but most will. Same with TRS2009, if you run in compatibility mode and ignore the CM2 error messages most things work. There are some issues with blended alpha which means that the majority of trees do not show up as the creator intended.

TRS2009 is still being worked on which means it may not be sensible to start building a big layout in it until they reach a stable build.

Which to purchase, well you pay your money and take your choice. I use TRS2009 most of the time for content creation but the version I think that has the best trees and steam loco support is currently TC3, but you need to purchase TRS2006 as well to get the built in content from the TRS2006 .ja files.

Woody:cool: ,

If you ask members to PM you , ( as you have requested in several of your posts ) , how does this benefit the Trainz members ?
If you have an answer to a question , it is best answered on the Forum , then all members can receive the knowledge of your inputs ?

thanks for all the replies guys. I took a look in the online store and notice that there isnt a digital download version of 2006 available, which is making me lean towards 2009.

does 2009 come with all 2006 content already? and 2006 stuff is mostly fully compatible with 2009??

I have both 2006 and 2009 ( plus a couple more older versions ) and I use 2009 98% of the time now. On my machine it runs better using the same routes and it has some enhancements that aren't available in 2006. Its content manager is much more stable than 2006's .

Also 2009 is actively being bug fixed and updated. With 2009 you have access to all content. Just run in compatibility mode for right now.

Just my opinion from one Canadian to another.

Just to muddle it up a bit don't forget about Trainz Railwayz from Merscom. Comes with TRS2006 with SP1 applied and Trainz Classics 1&2. Good bang for the buck if you ask me.

Trainz Driver is just that. TRS2006 with no way to build your own routes. It does come with the full Marias Pass and sweet AMTRAK F40 from HP Trainz though.

TRS2004 is a bit older but still very useable. Tons of content out there for it still. Very forgiving on adding new content built for it, means less error messages. Downside is most new content coming out is being built for newer versions. Also runs well on older computers.

For TRS2009, I'm on the fence about it. It looks very promising but seems to need some bugs worked out. Personally I'm waiting for the next release to see what shakes out. Plus side is you can, like has already been mentioned, run older assets in it in compatibility mode.

Any one has it's good and bad, but all are fun.
Dave..

Welcome to the Forum! Whatever Trainz Version you decide on, you'll have tons of fun and you can always pop on the forum for help and support!

Apart from that..............I would agree with what the other guys said, but as I love steam, I would personally follow John Whelan's advice and go for TC3 (Trainz Classics Version 3).

Just look at the stuff available for download on www.trainzclassics.co.uk (and there is more being made available every week at the moment!)

The same TRS2004 content actually runs slower on older computers using TRS2004 than running the content in TRS2006 or TC3. TC3 will give better frame rates than TRS2004 on 98% of computers older or not. If its dual or quad core then TC3 will definitely run faster than TRS2004.

Correcting the errors flagged in TRS2004 content in TC3 or TRS2009 gives you higher frame rates as well.

I was referring to my OLD windows box with it's cutting edge 64MB video card. Not everyone has the latest and greatest.

I'm one of those Mac heads who happens to like Trainz. Not sure about TC3 but I run windows on my mac book pro through VMWare fusion which knocks my system down to a single core 2.16 with 1GB of ram. Also cuts my x1600 256mb video card down to 128mb. I can tell you that while I meet the specs for TC1&2 it runs like a slide show.

I can run TC in boot camp and it is butter smooth with all sliders maxed. But I have to give up a lot of unused hard drive space for boot camp. Luckily for me 2004 serves my purposes well. When it becomes practical, I'll install a bigger drive and move up to TC or 2009.

I agree later versions of Trainz run older content better. Just don't think it'll install on that old game box I have.

Dave....

Thanks for all your help guys! I just purchased and downloaded TRS2009 and so far its all good! I've managed to download some locos and rolling stock, but im wondering what are some 'cant miss' routes?
