New SSD

I've just ordered a new OCZ 240GB Vertex Plus SSD for Trainz. Whats the best way to transfer my existing installation of TS2009 from my ordinary 1TB HDD, and is this possible, or will I have to reinstall from scratch. This is probably a very basic question, but I've never had a SSD before, and I want to be sure I get it right.

Many thanks in advance.

Ken

Just copy the whole installation. That's what I did, and it works wonderfully. If you need to be able to use the Download Cart or to be able to double-click on CDP files to import content into CMP, believe Shaneturner has some tutorials to point to the new location.

Thanks for the help, it's just what I was hoping for and I have Shane's tutorials bookmarked so I'll check that out.

I'm assuming that Shane's Trainz Protocol Changer is the one you mean to enable file associations?

Thanks again,

Ken

Obviously remember to install the OCZ Toolbox and drivers first. And if you are replacing a platter HDD make sure you use a SATA 3 cable.

No, the SSD will be in addition to my platter HDD. I intend to use the installation on the platter HDD as a backup, and as this is also my boot drive, the SSD will be dedicated to Trainz, with the boot drive for everything else. The SSD is a SATA2 drive, which is why it is reduced in price and within my means and I have SATA2 and SATA3 cables. The MB is SATA3, but obviously backward compatable with SATA2, so that is what I intend to use, a SATA2 cable. I think (I hope!) I've got that all figured out correctly.

If not, I hope some kind soul could give me a heads-up.

Ken, if your new to SSD (drives) just be aware that one of the quickest ways to bugger them is to defrag them. Never use Windows built-in defragger or any other defrag program to defrag a SSD (drive).

Always use the Intels SSD Optimizer in Intel Solid-State Drive Tool Box software that come with the Intel SSD (drive). It is recommended that you run the "Optimizer" once a week... http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18455

Cheers, Mac...

The proper drivers should notify the Windows defragger not to touch the SSD. They should also install the TRIM utility for the device as well which is basically a special defrag process for SSDs.

You'll find this show pretty informative, and very addicting. I've watched them all since I found it on Microsoft's MSDN Channel 9 website.

The other thing too. Don't worry whether you need to use SATA-2 cables with the device. The SATA-3 cable will work fine. They are interchangeable - the device will still work as an SATA-2 as it's spec'd out to be.

Is it possible to partition a SSD into say 3 x 80gb or 2 x 120gb depending on the size of your trainz installs.

Thanks for the advice.
The sata 3's are coming up to twice as fast as the 2's. It makes me wonder how much difference loading time is, a couple of seconds maybe ?
£90 at e buyer ocz 240gb vertex plus sata 2.

When I got my Vertex 3 loading times for routes decreased dramatically. I would suggest you time the loading of the heaviest Route you have, write it down then compare it when you run trainz from the SSD. Might also be worth running a route with Fraps to see what typical FPS you get with your HDD and then your SSD.

Yes, that's the one I'm getting, the price tempted me beyond my endurance to resist. Free delivery within 5 working days, which with the holidays, means Tues 8th.

Thanks to all here for the help, I'm much clearer in my mind about what I'm doing now.

@ John and Mac:

Yes, I caught another forum thread a few weeks ago that stressed "DO NOT DEFRAG", so I knew that bit, but it's well worth emphasising I think. I'm going to check out these links now, and get prepared for weilding the screwdriver when the drive arrives.

Once again, many thanks, this is a great forum.

There was a 240GB OCZ Revodrive 3 X2 for auction on Ebay recently and he wanted a starting bid of £100. He got the bid and ended it shortly after - I guess he must have got an offer? I'd love to know what it went for.

The advantage the revodrive has it goes into a pci-e slot and it's about 3 times as fast as a sata 3. It must make your eyes water trying to keep up with the thing.
