New PC - Mac or Other?

Roland,

Thank you very much for this detailed explanation. I have been trying to explain this to a friend of mine, not in Trainz, and your explanation summarizes this perfectly for his use. I hope you don't mind me copying this and forwarding it to him.

Regards,

John

But the pitfalls are there, and, coming from XP and using legacy software, you are likely to encounter one or two, sooner or later. Be assured, though, all the older 32bit applications, unaware of UAC policies, will still run, if you observe a few hints. It would be much better though, that software products for Windows adhered to standard security policies as they always did for Unix.

Translation N3V could do a better job of installing under Windows Vista and above by following the Microsoft Security conventions. Trainz is the only software I'd consider installing outside of c:\program (or x: etc) and you can ignore the 32 bit / 64 bit instruction bit, especially as Trainz under windows only runs on the X86 instruction set CPU and not on the Itanium instruction set.

I won't comment on what I found on UNIX machines and software that didn't follow "standard" security policies. I always found two versions of UNIX have so many subtle differences it was difficult to talk in terms of a standard.

Wow...!! I think I grasped some of it, but I am a blonde dummy with PC's and don't really understand them and that combined with age related matters gives me some pretty serious problems now.
So if 64 bit will run 32 why aren't any assets showing in Trainz? I have those that came with the products, namely TRS2004 but any I try to add even though they are in the correct place (I even downloaded some and installed them correctly) simply do not appear in Surveyor.... That is what I cannot understand.
I am going to give this PC a bit of time but in about 12 days I may buy the Upgrade to Professional anyway as that is supposed to run 32 better (or is that easier - for me?).
Still cannot get Live Mail working but that's another story, I would just like to get my big Dispatcher folder that resided in the World folder showing properly....

So thanks for that detailed explanation, it did shine some light in through the cracks in the computer.

Blessings,

Angela

The professional version shouldn't make any difference to running 32 bit software what so ever. It has a few extra features that are more to do with managing multiple PCs in a corporate environment than anything else. Which version of Trainz are you trying to run?

Thanks

I am trying to run 2004, and indeed it does work. The trouble lies with extra assets and older routes. I may have got around the asset problem, don't ask me how as I haven't a clue, but yesterday they all showed up.
But older routes are a different thing; most of the assets used are missing and they move very slowly in Surveyor. Now I went and downloaded all the assets for my own route A Kentish Winter and installed them but they don't show at all. Tried the same thing with other routes that were made with DS assets and they have a lot missing too so it is a real puzzle.
I downloaded all the assets for Kentish Winter from the DS again and installed them but that made no difference.

Has anybody any ideas please?

Blessings,

Angela

Ran TO on A Kentish Winter and only 6 missing assets and they were only listed because there were 'later versions', which most likely means for 2006, I have found this out before.
So everything is installed. Then I thought it might be caused by missing HOG files but they are also installed in World/Dispatcher/downloads. This means the route should show, as should all the other routes including mine which use DS assets, but they do not.

So there you have it. I have no idea what is going on, my only explanation was the 64 bit one but if you folks say that should not cause it, then what is?

Thanks for your replies,

Angela

I ran my own WCL3 V21 route and masses of assets are missing. On checking in TO that listed about 22 missing but all of those were for later versions of those particular assets.
Let us remember I moved the World folder complete from my old PC onto this one and installed in into Trainz so every single asset I used is in place...

Angela - this will not be of any help to you, but I would just like to let you know that on my old computer, XP Home, I had a lot of documents created in Microsoft Works. When I bought my new computer two years ago, I had the old hard drive installed in an external enclosure; I installed Microsoft Works on the new computer using the same CD which I had used to install it on the old; however none of the documents stored on the old hard disk would open on the new computer! So strange things can happen with a new computer, even using exactly the same system and software. I can not explain this but it sounds very similar to your missing assets problem. Fortunately I have not found the same problem with Trainz assets, either downloaded or my own creations.

There, I said this would not be helpful!

Best wishes.

Dear Ray,
Oddly it is helpful, it shows that it is not just me that is or has suffered such an odd thing. None of the routes have full assets, hardly any content at all in most of them so I am up the creek without a canoe. I am at a loss. The very thing I bought the new PC for won't work properly. It will work if I make a new route, or at least it seems that way, but I am not prepared to sit here foe another 10 years remaking them all...

Blessings,

Angela

Hi Angela, what an ordeal! I have to get at a few chores (can't read the whole thing), but was just wondering if anyone has mentioned user account control? I have mine turned off, I'm using plain old Vista. My Trainz pc is off line and I have had it turned off since my flight sim days. I'm not sure, but I think turning it off let me alter files that I could not when it was turned on. Sorry if it's been mentioned or does not apply to you. I sure hope you get things sorted out before you decide to shoot the darn thing!

Cheers....rick

In desperation I installed 2010 as that was supposed to run in Win 7. I had a devil's own job with it once I came to the set up part. It refused to recognise that it was registered at Auran, which it is, then when I eventually got it to accept that it would not recognise my password. Got that sorted eventually and actually got past those first screens and then it refused to do anything at all so I had to shut it down.
Got it up again and opened CMP but got the red line at the bottom saying it wasn't registered - again..!!
When I finally got that solved I went into My Assets but only 1 was listed, the Hood, nothing else and as you all know I have a few hundred. As this is 2010 I have no idea where assets are stored and even if I did it would make no difference, they are in code.
Then a message came up there was an upgrade so I accepted that but that complained and told me it could not get data or something. After that 2010 refuses to work at all, click on the icon a bugger all happens....

NOT A HAPPY BUNNY.............

Angela, have you done as I suggested and set up Trainz to run as administrator? See here http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?page=running-as-administrator

If not that did you install and is it fully patched up to date?

Can we have someone who actually has 2004 running in Windows 7 to lend a hand here please?

Oh hell, I forgot all about this. So I tried it with 2004 and it worked....!!

All my assets show and place in game now, all the warships and houses etc I made.

However it wasn't a success with 2010, that did not show any more assets than it did before even though they are all listing in CMP under My Content. So a bit of a disaster there, but at least 1 out of 2 worked.

I am rather elated at the moment so thanks so very much Clam for reminding me of your earlier suggestion.

Bless you,

Angela

Hi Clam,

That was a false alarm. Yes, Trainz is opening and all my assets are showing and routes open much better, only assets that are not on the DS are not showing. But when Surveyor opens there's syntax error every time and when I choose the rolling stock tab the same thing happens.

I tried running Priory Hall with a single loco but there are parts of the control menu missing, no speed indicator, that lower part is not visible and there should be a bar at top and bottom of the running screen but there are none. After a while 2004 crashes..

Tried taking ADMINISTRATOR off and just keeping the XP option checked but tnhat made no difference. Next I'll try it the other way round, Admin on and XP off, but not until tomorrow now, it's late

Blessings,

Angela

2010, don't forget you need to untick the yellow star and untick show only favourites from surveyor options, that's the usual reason things are not appearing.

Hi Clam,
We are talking 2004 really, hence the need to run either under an XP option or Admin. 2004 now won't open at all, it get all the way along the colour dots and that's it, I have to shut it down in other ways.
Yes, I do know about the yellow star, not of Texas in this case, and it was checked off.

So it means uninstalling 2004 and trying again I suppose.... Lord only knows what to do with 2010 though, I thought it was supposed to run on Win 7.

Angela

Hi all,
The good news is I have 2004 running - well kinda - it does run but I think it needs a better graphics card. When I go into the tables the contents are all white but clicking on a white square does bring up the correct graphic, but only for that tab, all others stay white.
But AI is working which is an improvement.
So still some problems.
This is with it after two reinstalls, and upgrade of course and running as Admin. I was half tempted to go for run as XP, which is really better for 2004, but did not. Maybe the white parts would go if I did that?
Have yet to get 2010 working though, although perhaps getting 04 right first might be better.

Hi Angela and gang. I agree that Windows XP seemed to run my Trainz programs the best, but after having changed Vista for Windows 7, I think Windows 7 is also pretty good Trainz wise. Recently I had a major problem with slow operation, choppy graphics and other issues. I think my full fledged AVAST antivirus program was the real problem and I finally just uninstalled it but stayed with the less intense AVAST free version. Trainz does seem to be a lot better now, but I haven't really had a chance to operate enough yet to be sure. I have a TB hard drive on a Lenovo 64 bit desktop with 5 gigs of ram and have installed TRS2004,2009,2010 and 2012. I may remove some at some point.

I also looked into Linux after trying out Zorin OS 7 Core and Ultimate. I finally installed Zorin OS 7 Ultimate in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 on the Lenovo. The Zorin is so "tight" that it is a pleasure to use for basic computing and web browsing, so I am with it 90 percent of the time. Per information I have seen, Linux can work with Trainz 2006,2007, 2008 but later versions don't work in Linux. The way Linux can work with Trainz is to use "wine". I have tried installing Trainz 2006 into Linux, but so far I have had a problem. It's been very frustrating, because during the installation, the graphics look like Trainz will operate fine, but the program hangs all the time. I really would like to see if I can get Trainz to run in Linux, so I'll keep experimenting. One glitch was during the install into Linux the program asked me if I wanted to install Direct X and when I said "Yes" the message said that Direct X was not compatible with "This version of Windows" So there we are.

Angela, I'm sorry that you had such a rough time and I hope things are working better for you by now.
