new OS any good for trainz?

For nowt +postage

Ron,
Bargain of the year for you. Jeantech 700 watt psu plus an nvidea geforce 9600 gso, 768 mb memory+580 mhz core pci express card.
Only drawback is it's probably cheaper for you to buy in austrailia than to pay for the postage.

hi fran1, rrsignal

i think so too

i looked around and that techbuy site looks good

over the Christmas holidays i will try and make up the components for a good system.
then i have to find the $ to pay for it

thanks mates

Hey Ron, I hope the wife is doing well.
I have been researching GPU's lately, and decided the 570 cards are in the sweet spot right now, if you have three to four hundred to spend. I have the Core 2 Duo 6850 and a GeForce 8800GTS right now, getting a bit long in the tooth.:)

hi mate

the doctors still doing tests, which she hates
none of them can agree with each other as to exactly whats wrong with her
you know the story

i have not done much on the route bar for placing a few of britanny's trees
been too bust with other stuff for christmas and new year

cheers
ron

You should get a video card that is matching/not exceeding your PC Power Supply wattage.

Mine had a 300 Watt LiteOn PS, so I bought a BigBox store: Galaxy 430 NvidiaGeForce 300 Watt video card. It has 1024Mb (1Gb) Graphics, and cost @ $100 (mail order is probably much, much cheaper).

Although it is a rather poor video card, it has excellent framerates

FTR, the 9600m would be a giant step backwards from what you already have. Among other things, it's a mobile GPU, not a real desktop one, not to mention the piddling 256mb of memory. The 9600GSO is a pretty good card, though, it's only about a notch up from what you have IMO and, as with any GPU upgrade, you have to be certain your power supply can handle it. No software program can identify the wattage and power ratings of the power supply - you'll have to actually look at the unit itself. FYI, a GTS 250 is a great card and I think it would be a better match for your CPU, but if your power supply can't handle the 9600GSO, the 250 is far worse. I think your current card is roughly equivalent to a GT 430 in terms of both power draw and capability. Also, bear in mind I'm an nVidia guy, not an ATI. Supposedly, ATI's are a bit better in power draw-versus-performance, though nVidia's are great performers and some folks around here think they're more Trainz-friendly. Food for thought.

Ron.
I've still got the 9600GSO 768mb PCIe, 580mhz core if you want it.
Have a trawl back over euphods posts, he posts a link to a reference chart comparing graphics cards. Look at that and see what you think.

I buy a lot, and I mean a lot! of my PC components and other goodies, from Milton, the Umart shop there. Its www.umart.com.au then click the Milton store, it's about a 15min comfortable walk from Milton train station (if you don't want to drive there) and I've found them to be excellent prices and good customer service, highly recommend them :)
