hi

what would this setup be like to play 2010 EE?

i have been looking for something for a wehile, but this is still the best that i can find

ASRock G41 Motherboard + Intel E6700 3.2Ghz Dual Core CPU + 4GB DDR3 Memory

also what graphics card would suit this system,
if its any good

thanks
ron

I'm using an Nvidia GeForce 220 with 1 gig and it does an excellent job, but it demands to be well ventilated. The ventilation on my machine is lousy so I have to kluge up extra ventilation to keep Trainz from blacking out, so I'd suggest looking to that.

I have that CPU. It rocks. I'm not a big fan of ASUS/ASRock, but see if you can get a p43 board for around the same price; that ASRock board has integrated graphics which you won't use. It also doesn't support PCIe 2.0; though that's not likely to be a big problem, if you can get a p43- or p45-based board for the same price, take it. Also, if you're thinking of getting that board because DDR3 is cheaper than DDR2, great, but there are other boards out there too that do this, like the Gigabyte GA-EP43T-USB3.

As for video cards, your power supply is more of a limitation than anything else. I have a GT240, which works well. Tigerdirect has a better 9600GSO for $14.99 after rebate, and a GTS250 for $49.99 after rebate. I think the GTS250 would be the best match. I would have gotten one, but don't trust my power supply to be able to handle it.

The 220's are small cheap cards, I would suggest a 460gt minimum as they are relatively cheap now and very good cards for gaming. If you have more money to spare then get a 580 or above.

hi rrsignal

i cant find that gigabyte mb anywhere
the tigerdirect site does not list any of the card you mentioned

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...rds&cm_sp=Masthead-_-Computer Parts-_-Spot 17

any ideas?

thanks
ron

Here's the 240. It should work with a 300-350W power supply:

Here's the GSO card. Needs a 400W minimum:

Here's the 250, which needs a 450W minimum:

As for the Gigabyte motherboard, well, that one might be tricky. The socket is obsolete, so the boards may be hard to come by. You might have to settle for a less-than-ideal brand or chip version, then, or may have to buy it from some place like Newegg (who I detest - been burned by them many times.) I saw Amazon had one of the boards I recommended, but it was something like $180! Look around to see if you can find a deal, but at this point, unless you are stuck on getting a socket 775-based machine, you might be better off going with an AMD Phenom-based system. The CPU will be more expensive, but the memory probably will be cheaper than the DDR2 that the older boards require, the motherboard will be roughly the same price, and the performance substantially better. I do know TD has some good deals on 1035T, 1090T, and 1100T-based AMDs, as I've been checking them over myself. The Phenoms actually outperform the brand-spanking-new Bulldozers in some areas, so it's worth looking into.

hi rrsignal

i cant even get onto their buy page to check the postage costs.
it tells me that page no longer exists.

i've had a look around here in the brisbane australia area,
but cannot find any of the ones you mentioned

i might have to get a whole new system in pieces as i find them,
and then put it together that way

i agree that if i'm going to do it again,
this time it will be the right way.

missy was just trying to give me something that i wanted

she's got no idea about pc's
she sits on the net and if it don't work,
she yells for me to fix it

i'll wait till after christmas to look around
might be able to get something then

hehehe

thanks

I highly recommend the MSI nVidea GT 430 Overclocked version. It has 1GB of DDR3 memory and runs TRAINZ 10 for me extremely well. I got mine from Newegg for <than $70 (US) almost a year ago. It won't overload your PS either. Hums along nicely at 30W+/-.

thanks tom

will look for ir after this weekend

it go go go for both days
even a christening somewhere in there.
i still do not have an address for that as yet and its already 1pm Saturday here

cheers

What wattage is your power supply? It should be right on it, albeit perhaps inside the case. If there's no wattage rating, what kind of computer?

I hate to disagree with Tom, but the 430 is a really low-end card, as is the 210, 220, and 520. It's really only meant for systems in which upgrading the power supply is not possible or practical, such as OEM or prebuilt systems, which tend to use extreme low-powered power supplies. Even if you got the 3.2GHz Pentium, it likely would bottleneck on one of those cards. I would know, as I've used them and similar. Even the GT240 which I'm running now is noticeably faster, despite being theoretically on par with the 430, and the 240 typically costs less, at least on rebate, and doesn't use much more power. The 9600GSO should theoretically be about 50% faster and the 250 about twice as fast.

Again, it depends on the wattage of your power supply and, to some extent, where you got it from. The 430 fills a niche, but you can do better if your power supply has the capacity. And, if you do upgrade to a modern AMD, even the 250 is likely to be a bottleneck in performance, though it'll probably be more than enough for Trainz.

hi mates

i got bad news and worse news
finally had time to pull the side of the pc
the power supply is 420w

that's way too low, isn't it?

wont have much time after yesterdays storms and today's
we had a roof lift and i gotta fix that before more bad storms come

when i get time, i will look for a new box with a power supply

what size watts is best?
what is the best motherboard to get?
duo or quad cpu?

graphics card to suit that system?

i think i will buy 1 item at a time when i can afford it

which would be the best way to go here?

i thought i finally l;earned a bit about pc's
but it seems i need top study more

thanks for all the help so far
its greatly appreciated

cheers

Seeing as everybody is going mad with comp specs, for the last month i have had to revert to a laptop...i-3 processor(quad core @2.27GHZ...with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHZ) etc 4gb of ram...500gb hd and wait for it....nvidia dedicated graphics card 350m(Dedicated)@512mb and still get excellent graphics with my samsung R780...screen size: 17.6

just thought i would give my 2 penneth,,if u got a desktop thats cool go for quadcore not dual core they are better and more or less the same as in price...

Derek:cool:

An HD 6850 only has a TDP of 127 watts and that should be enough video card to run reasonably well.

Add in an Intel i5-2400 cpu at 95 watts

Something an P8H67-I DELUXE motherboard.

and you maybe able to use the existing case and power supply depending on the connectors.

You can look them up at tomshardware.com

I'll stand back whilst others suggest other components. I'd probably add in a UPS but that's just me.

thanks john

will check on the net over the next few days when i can get time.

maybe i will wait until after christmas when the bargains come up

well, hopefully in my case anyway

thanks

There's a really good power supply calculator at:

http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

I input an ideal system with an AMD 1100T, run at 100% utilization, with a GTS250, 2 hard drives, 2 DVD+/-RW, and 6 fans. I came up with a maximum PSU rating of 393W. I added some stuff as a fudge factor but please add some more. As quoted, that's still much too tight for my sense of comfort, knowing that PSUs are often deliver less than their rated power. I feel confident, assuming you upgraded to the AMD machine I mentioned, that you could use a GT240 (and a 430) no problem. I kind of feel the 50% better 9600GSO might work for you. The 250 is cutting things real tight - maybe if the PSU was a good brand I *might* take the risk. I wouldn't - and didn't - take the risk and went for a lower card.

FYI, Tigerdirect DOES have an MSI card for $30 after rebate. I'm not a big fan of MSI but $30 isn't bad, assuming you are willing to take the risk that your power supply can handle it. But don't let that price tempt you too much as the 9600GSO is only $14.99.

hi rrsignal
