New Freeware Group: UP Trainz

I can agree to that Bluewater, but I update my routes and routes that I get from the DLS and third party sites all the time.

Like model railroaders say: "A layout is never finished." The same goes for Trainz, a route is never finished.

Also, since I am trying to get into creating loco's rolling stock, etc. What would you guys suggest?

H222, you've caused me nothing but hell ever since my site came out. I'll leave it at that. But I ask you to leave me alone unless I say otherwise, please. I have other things to focus on than somebody who scrutinizes me and my opinions everywhere I turn.

How? YOUR outbursts, YOUR incorrect facts or what?

I don't want people to have to download 800+ Content updates just for my route.

Those damn updates, all they do is make things work better or look better...

And what RRSignal said is also true; that Third-party sites go down all the time, or don't go updated. At MIRI, I am sure that that won't happen

Oh boy, where have I heard that before?

AMTRAKwannabe, clearly you have no idea how much work goes into building locos or content. Some people spend 100+ hours on rolling stock and coaches. I know of a steam engine cab that had 600+ hours spent on it, until it was given up on. If you think you can build something of JR's calibre in a couple of hours, you're kidding yourself

Just in case anyone's wondering, yes, it's from 3D Warehouse/Sketchup with no enhancements, and, yes, it's got through-the-roof poly counts.

Did someone say, "Sketchup"?

Amazing how often I need to outline this...

With the DLS, you retain your IP (Intellectual Property) rights for the works you create and upload. However, you grant N3V a non exclusive, royalty free, commercial license (e.g. the content could be included as built-in content in a future release), as well as grant permission for your content to be maintained on our website. Part of this is that, if the content is faulty (pretty rare on routes released after TS2009 was released, about the only time it's happened is when they lack a thumbnail in TS12 SP1), we will contact you to fix it.

If, after the designated period (8 weeks for the current DLC clean-up passes), you do not repair the content then it will be made available to the community to repair.

Note, if your route does become faulty (and hence need to be repaired), this does NOT include making changes to the route itself. Only changes to make the asset function (for routes, this should only be config.txt file changes) are permitted under the DLS Clean-up if an asset is made available for the community to repair.

As to downloading content updates, no matter where you download the route from, you'll need to download the updates if you also want all of the dependencies from the DLS (well, unless you waste time manually adding each download to the download helper). These content updates are, for the most part, repairs to broken content, and are generally recommended...

I'm not saying you need to use the DLS, however please check your facts before making the claims you've made.

And that's a license I'd like N3V not to have for my stuff. I based my claims off of a different (and older, by 3+ years) thread. Things have probably changed since then.

BTW Zec, how many times to you need to outline this? Just curious...

Zec keeps having to repeat it because people, yourself including, believe and repeat false and misleading information as to the nature of the DLS, licensing terms, etc. I've lost count of how many people have done it, and, I'm pretty sure, 90% do it knowingly and deliberately. To your credit, you at least admitted you were reposting false information, and, when so advised, cleaned up some of your posts; the vast majority of people who do this never 'fess up, even though some of your beliefs about how the DLS works still seem to be mistaken.

I'm just going to pretend to not notice the DLS brouhaha for the time being... :o

@AmtrakWannabe:
I think you don't really know how groups work so I'll try to explain. A group (such as USLW/RRMods/JR) is formed when a few content creators put their talents together to create quality content. Some professionally, others less so, but it is still content. "Content" usually means entire locomotives, traincars, scenery and trackside objects, or at the very least, polished reskins such as Dave Snow's when he first started. Routes are usually not strictly considered as "content creation" simply because there's so many out there of vastly varying build quality and also because it takes comparatively very little skill to build. Once in a while great routes come along such as the R&N, ones by dermmy (old but gold), Joe's Mojave Sub (which made it into TS12 builtin) and even impressive enough to warrant payware status like the TrainzItalia WfD series. But again, these are few and far between.

So you should understand that trying to start a group and simply asking people to hand their creations over to you is just not going to work.

Cheerio,
Nicholas

So true. Too many sites popped up over the past few months like this where someone grabs up a free website and just expects people to hand over their content to be posted. Really, in my mind at least, content creators who are not affiliated with a group don't want to be and if they ever wished that they would probably just request to join one of the larger established studios. I am terrible at route building so I hesitate to offer any criticism on this subject, but people need to know that you don't need your own website to host a couple of flat tiles with a default grass texture, straight line of track, and a handful of trees scattered about. That is not to say that is what you guys are doing, and I haven't seen any work of yours to pass judgement on, but my point remains - if you are going to host a third party site you better make content worth the visit to it.

Also for the record I am slightly offended by your "paywarist" thing. You make it sound like anyone who creates or purchases payware is a part of some evil syndicate.

Well, that settles it. This thread just leads me away from anything from this group, knowing the path it is going with assets and such.

If they purchase it, I don't care, that's there choice. If they make it all they do is add some "custom" features and say its worth money when I could edit any consist that I want right now with almost all of the same features.

Ya got that right.

Yes, I was running off of an old thread that had the same info I put out there. Didn't think for a second it was false, because nobody corrected the person. Well, everyone makes mistakes. Including me, no matter how awesome I am

To be honest, the DLS is a great place to get stuff (such as socalwb909's Bethgons), but its up and down, and that kind of makes it unreliable, at least recently. It's up at the moment. Are they doing maintainence on it, or is it a bug? Not sure exactly.

So, yeah. Apologize for causing a ruckus for ya guys. Didn't mean to, but, heck, it happened.

This group is dead.
5 days and dead already? That was quick .

it's from 3D Warehouse/Sketchup with no enhancements, and, yes, it's got through-the-roof poly counts.
I think this group / website actually had one good reason to exist: Hosting those "through-the-roof poly counts" assets so to prevent them from ending on the DLS :hehe: ;).
the DLS ... is up and down, and that kind of makes it unreliable, at least recently.
I keep hearing about this yet in 5 months time I can only remember being it down for a total of less then 48 hours. Must be location and/or time zone related I guess.

I do hope you are joking because the immense hilarity that would ensue following such an incredulous statement won't be very nice.
