New disc question

Hi all,

I have an issue with my current game disc in that it has been used so often that my computer will no longer read it, and on top of that the disc has started to crack outwards from the hole in the middle.

I am using 2006 as for me its the best version available (please lets not start a debate about that here! it just works fine for me) :D

The question is that if I just buy a new disc will it run without a new install? My original version was produced by 'Just Trains' and patched to the latest version but I can only find copies produced by 'Focus Multimedia' at the moment so they may not have the same build number :(

Any thought please?

Thanks, Andy

Do you have to have the disk in computer to run 2006. I have 2006 which is on a DVD just had to install it no need to have disk in the computer to run the game.

Somebody more knowledgeable may give you a better answer. As far as I know Just Trains are the only Auran licencee who copy protect their installation and require the disc to be inserted. I would therefore expect that only a replacement disk from Just Trains would not need you to re-install. It might be worth your while to approach Just Trains about your problem and see what they say.

Hi John...and John,

Yes the disc needs to be in the drive for the game to run and it is copy protected because I tried to copy it when it started to cause problems but found that I couldn't.

I was of the opinion that I would need another 'Just Trains' copy to save a new install and have sent an e-mail to their customer support to see what they say.

Which version of the game will run without the disc in the drive?? It may be worth me trying to buy one of those versions instead

Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy: I also have 2006 and find it to very stable and problem free. The Auran version (disc not required to run) comes in a blue box. I did a quick search on ebay and found several Australian vendors selling the blue box version (new & unused) for less than $20 AUS. plus shipping. Check it out.

Best Regards, tomurban

Also the version with a Norfolk Southern locomotive also does not require a disc in the drive, thank god since for some reason I only used my discs twice in the entire time I have had them and they have magically formed cracks and scratches...this must be new way of making you buy something new simply because they make it that way on purpose?

Andy,
go on flea bay, enter trainz 2006, 3rd one down is a Just trains (AURAN) DVD version. £8 I think, brand new. Contact the vendor to ask but I think it's a 5 disk set, in which case you dont need to put the disc in to run it.
Copy your local file to desktop, delete Trainz and re-install. You'll have to re-register (the 20 digit number) but you have your username+password and your profile will then show you have 2 versions of 2006. Bonus is you'll get a FCT which costs £13, bargain.

I find it bizarre that you actually think of those things....and believe them too...:o

hi Andy
You asked about which version runs without the disc in the computer. THe one I have is by focus Mutlimedia. It has a picture of a DB ICE on the front with a red backround. By their website there are a uk company. I bought mine in a bookshop in Galway for about €14 at the time a bargin

HI all,

Thanks for all of your replies. I will see if 'Just Trains' are prepared to replace the disc for me or otherwise I will buy one of the versions that doesn't require the disc in the drive to run the game.

As far as having the disc re-surfaced I have not explored this because of the four cracks that have appeared in it!

I was wondering if there was a way to download the free 2006 demo version and somehow copy that into my current installation folder (or copy my current files into the demo installation folder) and use that to run the game?

Any ideas if this is possible please

Thanks, Andy

Dear Andy,

I think that the demo version has some limited features (IIRC) - as you already have a valid registration number I think that you could buy a second-hand 2006 DVD (non- Just Trainz) to install the software and use your existing registration code.

That means that you can ignore the CD code on the box = you can use a secondhand disc - which has been registered already and has a low second-hand value.
May be cheaper than a nee disc from JT

At one time Just Trains were prepared to supply replacement discs for a nominal sum, may still be true.

Focus are a discount re-packager of older versions, usually to be found on those wire carosel (roundabout, can't spell....) racks in Staples, PC World etc. Earlier versions appear under all sorts of names!

Best thing is to always buy direct from Auran-copies for the UK are then posted in the UK by Mike10 from a bulk supply (when they arrive through customs) thus by-passing Just Trains and avoiding their copy protected versions.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. Just Trainz have said that they no longer have copies of 2006 available but seem to believe that they have copies of what they call 'sample discs' which they are prepared to send to me.

I am waiting to see if one arrives but if not I will look to buy new, and will probably go direct to Auran to do so, which will put some money back where its needed!

Wooo Hooo!!

Just Trains have just sent me a new disc to replace my tired old worn out one so I would like to take this opportunity to publically thank them for their kind gesture

The Trains will be running again sooner than you can imagine

You will still have to insert and remove the disk. This is not necessary with the Auran disk.

Thanks Paul and Tom for your replies. The bottom line is though is that I have been sent a free replacement for my original disc which I am happy about. :udrool:
