Will this be able to monster TRS06? I have a quote for (NZ)$1500 without Monitor or $1900 with a 22" Flatscreen. Also is this pretty reasonable for the cost?

INTEL Q9300 Quad Core 2.5GHz
4GB DDR2 800 RAM
500GB HDD (SATA)
9600GT 512MB Vid Card
DVD Dual Layer

to be honest i would upgrade the Gcard for something with more memory
something like this http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/668/87...0-Graphics-Card/Product.html?searchtype=genre

it will suit you better in the long run also depends if your much of a pc gamer....as you have to think of it like this if you want to play all the lasest games without problems then i would deff upgrade that card so it lasts you like 2 to 3 years the one your getting atm will not last very long untill its outdated
But yes it will run trainz 2006/04 great but also remember trainz 09 is out next year so i would for sure upgrade the gcard
but its up to you
just trying to be helpful

Trainz only uses single core so dual core is probably better, if you are using Vista 64 bit you will be able to use 4 gigs of memory, otherwise Trainz uses a max of 2 gigs, the operating system about 512mb or possibly 1 gig, the rest just looks pretty.

Prices vary enormously from country to country have a look at a tcouple of web sites and compare it to Dell's prices.

The video card doesn't strike me as being ideal, have a look at tomshardware.com for July or August best buys in video cards.

Hi Eso, check out this site, http://jncs.com/ I'm going to be ordering from them shortly. You get better components from them. I priced a Dell 630 with XP and one from JNCS and JNCS was $300 cheaper but with a better power supply and an extra cooling fan. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll definately do some more research on the GFX cards I think. I really don't mind spending a bit extra if it makes a huge difference. Someone did say to miss the Nvidia 9 series as they aren't a whole lot different from the 8's, does anyone know if this is true or not?

Thanks for those links but I really need to stay local because the shipping from the US or UK to New Zealand would be HUGE!!!!!! :hehe:

I'm doing pretty well with a 9600GT 512Mb but then I upgraded from a 6600LE so the comparison ain't great. That said a blank baseboard in TC3 gets 1600FPS on my system. IMHO it wouldn't be an appalling choice but you might do better.

Sites wise Overclockers UK are always worth a look.

9600GT 512Mb are rubbish i bought one at pc world and geuss what it went stright back as i lost 25 fps in Rail simulator go for a 8800 gt or gtx

Thanks Overmars that was what I suspected :) I'll go have a chat with the guy building it and see what he has to use in place of the 9600GT. Those 1GB 9800's do look the business though (damn budget/wife/children...:hehe: )

Hi, thought I would jump into the discussion,I got new comp 8 months ago,AMD cpu 2.8 gigs 3 gigs memory,N Vidia ge 8600GTS 512 for memory.
Computor came preloaded with Vista but I dumped that really quick and downloaded all the drivers needed for XP ,loaded up XP and trs runs at about 50 to 60 fraps.
Comp is HP media edition ,they claim you cannot uninstall vista and load XP but it can be done quite easily.
By the ,its good to be back into trs

Thanks for all your help fellas  I thought i'd post an update and say i've ordered my comp and fingers crossed it should arrive today!!!

In the end (and with a huge bit of luck) I bought the following...

Intel Q9600 Quad core (2.6Ghz I think)
4GB DDR2 800
500GB Sata HDD
Nvidia 9800GTX 512MB gfx card
Vista home premium

All for NZ$1500 which is quite a bargain!! Just the waiting part to go now.

Hi,

Overall it looks good, but personally I would not go for the Q9600, I would go the Core 2 Duo E8600 at 3.3GHz, nothing uses Quad Core (or Duel for that matter).

4GB Ram, only if you are going to use 64bit Vista/XP.

For an extra $80 you could get a GTX260 instead of the 9800GTX, but then you could keep this in mind for later once the budget recovers from this purchase.

Also, what is the Motherboard thats keeping the whole thing together?

hope that makes a little sense... :)

Hmm .. I have an app that can and does use all of my 8 core WS

As for Trainz not using duel core.. A Quote from Bloodnok .. and the Death of an Urban Legend :D

As far as multiple cores goes - Trainz is multithreaded - but there is a lot that runs in the main thread that is not threaded, and can't be easily made threaded. Over time, more threads are added. TRS2004 had threads, but didn't do all that much in them. TRS2006 improved the threading significantly. As of TC3, Trainz will use a dual core processor fairly well, but you're unlikely to get much additional benefit from a quad core. If the choice is between a fast dual core processor, and a quad core which while faster overall has individually slower cores, I'd take the dual. 2009 may well have a bit of additional threading - but it's going to be an evolutionary step, not a revolutionary step. I'd still take the dual for 2009 as well

But none actually use a Duel or Quad Core CPU efficiently is more the point, I run E6600 with TRS2006 and TC3, there is not much difference in performance increase over my older P4 with HT.

Even the "big" Crysis that was going to use Multiple Core CPU's didn't do that good of a job.

So my point is that instead of spending the money on a Quad Core, get a Core 2 Duo that's a faster speed and get a little more benefit that way.

Hope that makes sense...

LoL .. Yep efficiency is a funny thing and not always what it's cracked up to be ... fully expecting an email soon boasting of improved efficiency in the next release of the afore mentioned app ... no doubt they'll also be looking for more money ... fat chance :hehe:

Back to Trainz .. some threading is still better than no threading at all though ,, yes ? .. and Bloodnok also thinks a duelly is the way to go .. so you are correct :)

Cervat had his wires crossed apparently , who'd have thought that the game that would fully utilize a quad could actually bench so badly
