Needed A Vacation

A way long time ago I started building a route (TS12).

But anywho, between SP1 and being burnt out on making the route I decided a diversion would be in order.

For the last year I been playing almost exclusively iRacing.com with a dash of Euro Truck Simulator 2 thrown in.

Managed to put together a decent sim racing rig: Logitech G27 wheel with pedals and a H-pattern shifter and lots of buttons. Got a wheel stand pro to hold it together. The last bit I added was one of these babies;

5 2-way momentary toggle switches, 6 push buttons, 5 rotary encoders. Using a knob to adjust things such as 'brake bias' is a bonus. But I'll get back to the "button box" later.

So the other day I'm thinking "I wonder how much Trainz has moved forward?".

It's time to check it out. I create a copy of my TS12 folder (version 49922 I think) and patch it up to the latest version (61388) just to see how it looks. My FCT had expired long ago so I buy a 6 month ticket, that way I can also update all the assets. Wow, over 2000 updates needed.

So now I got my Trainz fully patched and updated.

Time to go into surveyor first and see if things have improved.

Wow, Yes, things are much better with the latest hot fix.

I'm now back to being able to zip around the map without things popping in and out all crazy like.

61388 is looking to be what I needed.

I tested my WIP route with all the updates and it still works.

So, anyway, back to the button box. I'm looking at this thing thinking it could be a cheap alternative to a dedicated train controller.

Unfortunately Trainz doesn't recognize USB devices such as this. But JoyToKey may make it work.

My final word.

Trainz is moving along quite well. A few bumps (really big bumps actually), but moving along.

I'm thinking that if I limit my life in Trainz to only 1 day a week I won't get so burnt out again.

Welcome back William.

ETS2 is an excellent sim when used with a wheel. With what little free time I have it's always hard to choose between that and Trainz.

Regarding controllers, have a look at the last post in this thread:

I'm thinking that if I limit my life in Trainz to only 1 day a week I won't get so burnt out again.

This is a brilliant idea. Makes you look forward to this day each week full of ideas.

Vacations from anything are good especially creative projects because of burn-out. The step away gives the mind time to recover and when stepping back in there's a new refreshed look at the projects.

That controller is a neat idea and surely would work well with electric locomotives. Perhaps N3V can release some kind of SDK eventually for TANE so people can write drivers to talk directly to various USB devices rather than going through some other third-party tool.

I like that idea. Some kind of standard way to send information to the devices would be good. Like Speed, boiler pressure, etc.
