Stay away from Dell and Mac.

A laptop will cost somewhere upwards of $1000 or more, for a good 1-2 Gb video card.

A desktop upwards of $ 800 or more.

Your old desktop can be can be retrofitted wih a higher wattage power supply and a 1-2 Gb video card for under $500

A brand new laptop, I3 or I7, that has 8 GB Ram, and 1.5TB Hard Drive with a carpy integrated graphics card ... is no better than an old XP machine.

Trainz only uses 2Gb of Ram ... the video card is what matters, and a fast processor @ 2Ghz or better.

Ts2009 and up can use up to 4 gigs of memory under a 64 bit operating system.

You can build an excellent Trainz machine for about $500. Plan to add $100-$130 for a copy of Windows if you don't already own a copy that can be installed on a new machine (OEMs like Dell have non-transferable versions.) Just to give you an idea:

Mind you, the power supply on that example is underpowered and it doesn't have a video card. Plus, you really don't need 8Gb of memory, but hopefully you get the idea.
