Have you updated your video driver? What kind of video card do you have? I had the same problem recently, and an NVIDIA update to the latest driver repaired the problem.

As John has illustrated, current drivers are essential for your video card. Content Manager requires a robust Open GL installation, which comes with the video drivers.

Try running a DxDiag from Start...Run...DxDiag....enter, and see what the report says.
