Need help understanding video drivers

Hello everyone

I am one of those people who knows absolutly nothing about how a computer works but has the small required knowledge that allows me to play on one. That being the case, I am trying to understand the whole directx/opengl thing. I have been to the nvidia site and downloaded what it says are the newest drivers for my computer. However I still am unable to make trainz2006 work in opengl mode. Now I know this means that I haven't got opengl but is there anyway I can so I can have the fun of using the CMP like all the other lucky people out there? The video card in my computer, according to nvidia, is a Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Controller. Is that not able to run opengl? Please help me undertand this as I get way to confused trying to read all the technical mumbo jumbo on the sites. Thank you for your assistance

To use OpenGL, you must first download it and install it along with your drivers. It is like DirectX (Microsoft proprietary) for doing things with graphics.

Change your graphics option from O/Glide to DX (in options on the opening screen), n/vid seem to run better with this.

one more question

Hello

Thanks for the replies. So if i'm understanding correctly, I just need to download opengl drivers to make this work right. Now for another question. Please bear with the annoyingly simple questions but being the nitwit I am with computers, I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing so I don't make my computer into a giant paper weight. Can anyone give me a link to the drivers I need to download? Once again, I thank you for your time and assistance. Maybe one day I may be able to say I know something about computers besides just "Ok, I turned it on.....hey look, it comes with a built in retractable cup holder!"

Click on your trains shortcut, open start menu, select options, display settings, you will see open glide and direct x, try ticking the dx option.
Is your laptop up to the minimum specs required for trains. See side of disc box for them.

I have no problem running using the directx setting but then I can't use the CMP. I undertand from everything that I have read that I have to have opengl for that. What I want to know is exactly what to download and where excatly do I get it. I hope this makes thing a bit easier to understand.

Hi trainmanmarsh

I'm not sure you have to go and get Open GL. For me I'm pretty sure it was already there.

Try this:

Save and close Trainz.

Open Trainz.

At first screen, select this:
aaaa1.jpg

Then select your choice here -you can change it as often as you like:
aaaa2b.jpg

Then launch Trainz again and see how it goes.

Call back if it doesn't work. Call if it does too. It'll be nice to know you're up and running!

Cheers

Hello

I have tried switching back and forth from directx to opengl. when i try to open in opengl i get a message saying that my computer is unable to comunicate properly with trainz2006. it then tell me to check the settings and if i switch to directx it works find except for the CMP. i would like to be able to use the cmp so i can have more options when I try to make routes of my own. it gets very boring using only what comes with the program. of course if there is another way to download extras without the cmp, i'm all ears....or would that be eyes...oh well. I look forward to what ever help i can get

Hi Trainmanmarsh.

Sorry to hear you've still got problems.

I'll have to ask others to help you out. I'm stumped as well now:confused:

There are lots of helpful people here. I'm sure someone will arrive with some more suggestions before too long.

Cheers

Nobody spotted this?
"The video card in my computer, according to nvidia, is a Intel(R) 82845G Graphics Controller"

Where exactly did you go for the drivers? as you need Intel OpenGL drivers not Nvidia.

Try this link http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-004662.htm

or use this http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm

I've gotten the same error message as you, "...unable to communicate properly with Trainz..." after updating my video driver. To fix this, go to the second screen shown in Casper's reply and make sure that your laptop supports the resolution shown in the window. Change it if need be to one that is supported.

This fixed it for me and made OpenGL usable again.
