I've been on two trains that have hit and killed pedestrians, the first time the conductor was breaking down over the P.A. as he announced it. Not to downplay how awful it is for the families, but people never take into account how much it hurts the guys running the train.

I was on an MBTA commuter train that hit someone also. The train crew really were very upset and later on they had to appear in court over the accident because the family tried to sue the "T". I definitely feel bad for them because there's nothing they can do no matter how hard they try.

and yet once again this morning 1 person was killed when a car collided with a metra tri rail.

No offense to anybody who's loved ones have committed suicide by standing in front of a train, or really anybody who has or has had a family member hit by a train, but everybody forgets the emotional trauma that train crews go through when they hit a person. I think, that while people should also pay respects to the person gets hurt or killed, they also need to think about the train crew and what they are going through as well.

I've never given it a thought... It's probably the same as if I hit someone with a car. I'll keep it in mind for now on.

My family learned during an Ancestry investigation, back in the 30's we lost someone who "walked out of a bar... who's remains were scattered 1/8 mile down the tracks." I think it was my granfather's uncle or something to that affect.

When my dad was in high school, his English teacher used to say the following poem out loud:

Kidding aside, this really is a serious thing, and sadly people thing that trains can stop instantly or at least as fast as a small car. Even truck drivers have this issue when someone cuts them off on the highway. Last Friday there was a major accident on Interstate 495. Some young numb-nut kid cut a truck off while he was entering on to Route 495 south from Route 213. He cut a tractor trailer off. The truck swerved to avoid hitting him, and people were killed in the accident as they hit the truck which tipped over. I'm not sure if the kid got nailed too or if the truck driver survived the crash.

Trying to beat out a larger, faster vehicle, no matter how slow they may appear, is a stupid thing.

I agree though, the crew will carry this with them for the rest of their life unlike the family or the person who completed their own demise.
