NavPoints Demo route

Is wish to thank Rob for releasing the NavPoints Demo route and its three associated session: so far, I never figured how to use NavPoints :D.

I have not yet decided if I like having icons floating above the map or not, but I would like to see more demo routes and sessions like these, explaining the various possibilities offered by rules. Since the release of the "Rules and Session Manual" back in 2006, session authors have been left more or less on their own.
As a consequence, I think session authors (including myself) are not aware and not able to fully exploit the capabilities provided by the Trainz. Can we hope to see a new "Rules and Session Manual" envisaged, somewhere in the future?

Hi Carlo - I looked for the NavPoints route in CMP and on the black pages and can find no trace of it. Could you please quote the kuid numbers.

As a writer of specialised driver commands and rules I often examine the scripts of such assets to see what "makes them tick' and in this way gain an understanding of how to use them. A manual of rules and driver commands would need to be written by people such as myself and the best place for it would be the TrainzDev wiki. At this stage I lack the skills needed to get started with using the Wiki, or I might already have begun to add pages to it.

There are hundreds of these rules and driver commands and more seem to pop up all the time. Creating documentation for them is not easy, is very time-consuming and not as rewarding as writing the commands themselves.

Regards

Trevor

Thanks, Peter. So they are built-in to SP1 and not on the DLS. I will only be patching up to SP1 in about a month so will have to wait until then.

Cheers - Trevor

They are not builtin, they are at the DLS, but You need TS12 with SP1 to use them.

Correction:
They are built-in into TS12 SP1, they are not on the DLS.
Tested this by searching for them in TS12 build 49922.

However:
They have build version 3.6, so in theory you can export them and import them into build 49922.

The NavPoints rule is built-in in TS12. The route and its three the associated sessions are not, however: they are on the DLS and they were released a couple days ago (see image below).

I have posted information on the map and sessions, these are on the DLS and are trainz-build 3.7. The assets used by the map and the sessions are a different matter.

Glad to see you've spotted the demonstration sessions regarding nav points and session scoring.

There's also a new wiki page here with some guidelines for session style and some ideas on how to use these features.

To answer a few questions:

Yes, we will be making a lot more use of these features in the future.

We find that a single nav point can often replace paragraphs of descriptive text, and avoid undesirable shortcuts like sorting boxcars by colour.

I've uploaded a session that uses the full kit, here:

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?113671-DowntownTraction-Co-a-new-session

Well, not quite the full kit. I've not used the scoring - keeping a score reduces a simulation to just a game.

And, hey, all the engineers, brakemen, Yard Masters and Dispatchers working on my routes don't need a pat on the back with a "Well done, your score is now 1088". They know themselves when they have done a good days work.
