Names

Hi

I would like to change the names of my installed wagons.

By this I mean open then for editing and adding a small prefix so they are all lumped in one section alphabetically.

Example. The original name of a box car is Box Car A. I would like to change it to Z Box Car A and so on for the rest.

If I upload the session, will this cause any issues with other users who have the same Box Car A?

Nothing else is changed just the name.

Cheers

Editing the config file username tag, save and commit

I use the Prefix: A space, for all my favorite assets, that way they show up right at the top

A P space, (for PRR)

For RGCX I use the prefix: R space,

For Majekear I use: M space,

For Felix_G I use: F space,

For Greenery I use: G space,

For Signals I use:
A P G space, (A PRR Gantry)
A P T space, (A PRR Trackside)
A P D space, (A PRR Dwarf)
A F L space, (A Frog Left)
A F R space, (A Frog Right)

A H (Hopper)
A B (Box)
A F (Flat)
A T (Tank)
A G (Gon)
A C (Covered Hopper)
A HC (HiCube)
A D (Double Stack)

2 8 0 space, (for A&S #632 Heavy Consolidation 2-8-0)
4 6 2 P space, (for Streamlined Pacific PRR #1362 4-6-2

AW (for wash shed for Washenlaunge)
AW Marsz-I Maglev Washing Facility v00

To answer the final part of your question, any changes that you make to the config.txt file of an asset will only have an affect on your system, not on anyone else's.

So, for example, if you upload to the DLS a session you have created that uses a wagon that you have renamed (through the config.txt file) then when some one else downloads that session they will get:-

  1. the kuid of the wagon which their copy of CM will use to locate and download that wagon from the DLS (assuming it is on the DLS and they do not already have it). That downloaded or already installed wagon will have its original unedited config.txt file without any of the changes you have made.
  2. any properties you have set in the session for that wagon, such as its name (in the wagon surveyor properties window, not the config.txt file as noted above) and any product loads you have assigned to it.

How interesting but doesn't answer the OP's question and concern.

What you do locally stays local. When you upload a route / session that contains certain objects, what you are actually giving is a reference to those objects. In Trainz those are the kuid numbers.
When someone else opens your shared route, they either already have those objects or have to download them from the DLS or a third-party site. So if you rename a boxcar, no one else will know.

Some assets may have the config name in its properties window like engines. If you change the name in the config then that name will be the name that the driver in your session will look for but it wont show in any downloaded route as it will have reverted to the original name and the session driver will not find it.

Not certain, but when the creator updates the content, won't you lose any customization you've given it because of a new config.txt?

Not sure exactly what your meaning is here but if you alter the config.txt file for your own use and the creator updates the original asset then yes you will lose your customisation when your system receives the new update.

The only way around that is to clone the original asset, alter it to your heart's content, and then use the clone in your route/session. But of course, the clone must remain only on your system unless you have been given permission to upload it by the original creator.

That's exactly what I meant. I've renamed quite a few of my most-used pieces of content. Once in a while, when it's updated, I have to do it again. I don't like to clone things and then use them because it's hard to make sure you've only used itmes from the DLS on your route before uploading it.

The Status column in CM will display all cloned and locally modified assets as "Modified" when you list the dependences of a route or session.
