N&W 382

at strasburg?

are you kind me? it was at STRASBURG.

If you know the answer, don't ask the question!

For that charter, no one (except those involved with the charter) knew that "382" would be rolling out of the shops instead of 475. With many special details added to the engine, including 382's distinctive whistle, it was quite a special event. $150 well spent!

what $150 dollars for a charter with 475? why dont they try a photo charther with 1361 if they got back to steam.

To note, Strasburg hasn't ever organized their own photo freights, with possible exception of "Trains & Troops". Other charter organizers (John Craft, Carl Franz, Lerro Productions) are the ones who make these charters happen. Strasburg of course has a part as they provide the equipment and crews, but the charterers are the spark that make the event happen.

This one has Lerro Productions to thank for making "382" return from long gone memory.

I'm not sure what a "charther" is, but a charter with 1361 will only happen when the engine is operating. Even if Strasburg was put on it, it would still be several years for it to happen. I thought we had moved on from this idea, anyway.

Besides, this thread is about N&W 382. It's annoying enough when you derail other threads with random ideas, but now you're derailing your OWN threads with random ideas? Just wow

still why was 475 weatheered for the photo charter as N&W 382?

during 475 days on the NORFOLK & WESTERN did it had a spark arrester like the 382?

Nope, 475's current appearance is very close to its as built appearance. All the features added for the 382 charter were just that: features

Yes, but not by that much. The 90 is bigger engine wise, but 382 (and 475) have larger tenders. If anything, this ends up making them about the same size.

That, and what difference does it make if 90 is bigger than 382 (or 475)?

Better get this out of the way.

For the charter, 475 received many temporary modifications to resemble sister engine 382. The 382 was well known for being photographed by O. Winston Link on the Abingdon Branch. To become 382, the modifications to 475 included:

1: A stack cap on top of the smokestack (made out of a 50-gallon barrel)
2: Two plows added to the bottom of the pilot (made of wood)
3: A second railing on top of the pilot
4: Freshly painted "Norfolk & Western" lettering on the tender
5: The entire engine was weathered by rubbing ash and soot on the engine to resemble a truly hard working steam engine
6: All 475 lettering becoming 382, including a new numberplate, new additions to the headlight, and magnets on the cab
7: White paint added to the side of the running boards
8: Most notable was the custom whistle once worn on 382. The story goes that the 382's regular engineer (name escapes me at the moment) made the whistle out of an old artillery shell. Also impressive is that Pete Lerro was able to track down the current whistle's owner and paid for the man's ticket and hotel so they could get the authentic whistle onto "382"

All of the added details (except the whistle, which went back with its owner) are now in storage. It's very likely another event like this will occur in the next few years

yea strasburg sholud try the 1218 whitsle on the 475.

That had nothing to do with the post or the thread. You're doing it again: this thread is about the N&W 382 charter, and now you post about 1218's whistle and 475? What?

Incidentally, I hear that NKP 765 wore the 1218's whistle during a photo charter in October. I have yet to find a video confirming this, though some very trusted railroaders have confirmed it

SO after the charter did strasburg just left 475 in norfolk and western on the tender and renumber 475 cab?

As the N&W lettering was paint, it is going to stay like that for the forseeable future. The cab only got magentically re-numbered, so the engine is now N&W 475 instead of Strasburg 475

yea what about the strasburg lettering on the tender N&W style?

yea what about the strasburg lettering on the tender N&W style?

I just answered that. The 475 is now lettered "Norfolk and Western" on the tender. The whole tender was repainted for the charter, and the railroad will keep it that way for a while
