Only just catching up with this (I obviously missed it when it happened.) But I had my own issue back in December when, for whatever reason (we never did get to the bottom of it) my primary TRS22 installation could no longer login to MyTrainz. So I instantly lost the game. Fortunately I had a backup installation, which was fine, so I was able to carry on playing. But it does seem crazy that any interruption to internet access or ability to logon should have such immediate and catastrophic effect.
Is it not possible to have a 'play offline' option so the game carries on running for a set number of days before it needs to 'phone home'? Accepted that we won't have DLS access (and maybe not installed DLC) but at least we won't lose the whole game while N3V are trying to get the meter running again?
