Multiplayer Down?

Multiplayer still down. No UMR for me. Going to spend the down time getting the "other" multi player. After a long absence from train simming (I was an Aussie MSTS guru) I loved being able to do MP stuff after finally getting TS12, but, gee Auran, what does it take to make a simple post to let us know what is going on?

I agree dubbodaniel - no info ever and down too much. The users never know what is going on. Get some more reliable servers please, that would help tremendously.

I'm suprised there, as the ITrainz systems (which include Multiplayer) are online.

Anyway, N3V does not have direct control over server issues, as the servers are owned by a company in the US.

Thats interesting. Do you have a member of staff in Texas,USA, where the servers are?

No. Servers hosted in data centres are inevitably controlled remotely. Short of a hardware failure, we have complete control over the servers. (For a hardware failure, we are simply moved to a new machine- this can incur effort on our part, but is not fundamentally different from migrating a local server.)

Makes sense. Are you also in control during server outages (as is being described in this thread)?

Generally speaking, yes. We don't have the resources to man the servers 24/7, so whether there's someone available to look after any problems when they first occur is a bigger issue, but we are "in control" in the sense that it is our task to rectify any issues.

That's not to say that there are never outages elsewhere. We have had hardware failures which have required us to migrate everything; this is time consuming and unavoidable. There are occasionally brief network outages which affect the connection between various users and our servers. But that's not what we're referring to here.

kind regards,

chris

Hi Chris,

Apologies for my slow response - I've been sorting out other things.

One thing I feel that needs improving is the way outages are reported and handled - as it stands, the only way users like me know of an outage is when we attempt to use the function or functions affected by the outage.

Completely agreed. Sometimes the only way that *we* know there is an outage is when you tell us. We're very lacking in the automated reporting tools department. It's most definitely on our list to improve.

I'm glad we agree on something.

I don't like to have gripes with N3V if I can help it, but sometimes it happens - it's similar to the issues I'm having with TADDaemon and TrainzUtil, which I've got details of in a seperate thread.
