MSTS Conversion?

I don't think it's easy to accomplish at all, or even possible, unless you did it totally over in GMax or by some other very technical means.

I won't tell you how, but it's certainly possible to convert them in a certain manner which at least keeps UVW coordinates for the textures, and possibly animation. I can't really remember about that one. The models still require substantial work in Gmax or 3Dsmax to be able to export to Trainz, and the conversion has many flaws. It takes a lot of time and some good knowledge of Max.

The reason I'm not going to tell you how is because if people work it all out, then people may start converting things without permission, which is a big no-no. There's also a huge difference in the way the models are made and textured in MSTS and Trainz, and most really won't look good anyway.

Do a search of the forum on MSTS and you will find that this topic has been raised several times. I would add the following :-

Discussion of possible methods is frowned upon because it would encourage piracy.

For good results you would need access to the original mesh from the creator. If it was created using TSM then the original files cannot be imported into GMax (I don't know about Blender but would be suprised if it was possible).

You would need a good working knowledge of GMax, especially animation, to be able to do it, so creating from scratch is just as easy.

how does one convert an MSTS loco to a trainz loco?

It depends on if you have the source or not and which software the source is in.

3D Canvas is possible, others are more complex, you need to understand the differences between the two, especially bogeys. My suggestion would be build a loco from scratch in Trainz to understand the process after that if you have access to the source you may have a chance.

I had a look at one in Blender and I think eventually gave up.

Cheerio John

No, is a better word...

 Why?
  • Inferior mesh modeling(you can make the same "box" in gmax).
  • Inferior texture data/different format.
  • Piracy.
So, either you can learn do make what you desire, or wait for the item to be made for Trainz.
