Moving a FRED

Hi;
I have a train with a FRED on the end. I want to leave some cars in the yard and move the FRED to the new last car. The only way I can do that is to uncouple the FRED and back up into it again. But that isn't very practical, if the FRED is on one of the cars you want to leave behind.

Does anyone know of a way to move a FRED in a more prototypical way?
I would also like to be able to carry several spare FREDs in the loco. I would think that all mainline train crews carry spare FREDs.

It would also be nice to have real working FREDs. Maybe it could be built and scripted, and read through the Trainz message handler. That said, we would also need separate air pressure readings for the train and the loco, and figure in the drop through the train. Leaks would have to be figured in as well.

I better stop dreaming so much.

That's interesting...

 In TRS2004, we had a EOT that could be uncoupled, then when coupled to another car properly turned itself to the correct direction...it got lost somewhere between TS2010....

It's funny though, an EOT must be handled like you would a caboose...:hehe:

On the other hand, maybe you could add an EOT to your custom train list for entrance into the game, then use the Train Eraser to remove an out of place EOT(in TS2010).

Not the person to ask on how to do this, but a lot of modern content has built in FRED's or BOG's that appear on the end of the train automatically. I'd look to how those were done. It might be as simple as copying a few lines from the config file to each of the rollingstock items you wish to have this feature.

I'm sure someone else here will have a more elaborate way of explaining how to do this.

Note: Might be worth asking permission from content creators before modifying their items. But most will be fairly agreeable as long as you have no intentions to release it for the public. Some may even update the item themselves if they see it worthy.

Here is a start...

 Over at TrainzPro Routes, Mr. Wolf_9 has provided Ortner 3-bay hoppers.

Automatic FRED on end cars (with daylight sensor) is the default EOT...configurable at that.

The cars also support Automated Running Numbers(ARN), so I am sure that Mr. Wolf_9 will make arrangements with you for proper dispersal.

Mr. Wolf_9 is good about helping-he's from the 'old school' of Trainz!

I've never played with the custom train list. I'll have to see how it works.

Yea, but I guess that is the only method Trainz has at the current time. That said, I think I know what happened to my EOT. When I coupled another loco to push the car, it probably got stuck between the loco and the car, and when I uncoupled, it was still attached to the loco, not the car. I'll think of it as a caboose from now on.

Edit: Sure enough, the FRED was on the front of the loco. I re-coupled to the car, and was able to re-attach it to the EOT. It was difficult doing so though, because driver kept changing the active loco from the one I was using to re-attach the FRED to the lead unit on the train. I had forgotten to click on the loco, but it seems that there are some issues with Trainz when locos are used at both ends of the train.
