Kalmbach Publishing Company said they would be shipping the 75 Year DVD Set containing all Model Railroader Magazine issues this month. Has anyone who ordered it gotten it yet? I haven't.

They gave me an address to check on my orders status it doesn't work.
but
Thanks,

Ben

Thanks guys. Definately looking foreward to it. Just think of all the plans if nothing else.

Ben

And the space. I doubt that I'll actually pack up my back issues for the swap meet, but they'll certainly get moved to the storeroom. That will free up three of four feet of shelf space for new stuff. :D

I've got quite a stack of them too and I have no where near all 75 years worth. Thats gotta be major cubic yardage but never fear "stuff" always multiplies to fill the void.

Darwin was wrong ya know. Humans are not descended from apes. Rather we are descended from packrats (cuz I have the closets, attic, garage, storage rooms, etc full of junk to prove it, lol).

Hope there is a good search function built in but if not perhaps some sort of overall master index. Locating specific things might be a bit time consumming otherwise. For example I know the plans for the Virginian 2-10-10-2 (my favorite loco) were published in MR but quite some time ago and I have no idea even as to the decade.

While I agree with you about the search function, it'll be kind of a shame too. Half the time when I was going through back issues trying to find something I'd come across other things I'd forgotten all about and instead of one project I'd end up with two or three.

I forgot about this. I had the announcement in my email, but my mail.pst folder got corrupted and I lost it. I'll have to put in my order for it!

I agree, Ben. We are pack rats. My old company was a good example. When we moved from one location to another, we got rid of 28 US tons of old equipment and junk! These were old Sparc stations, PCs, printers, piles of hard drives, etc.

Hi JCitron:

Yup - I have 6 Commodore Computers and all the stuff that goes with them(that still work) and 3 dot-matrix printers. Now where in the world would I ever get ribbons for them (and why would I want to, lol).

Hi Whitepass:

Hummm - that does not sound promissing. Does it have a master index perhaps?

Ben

I tried to find some photos and it only finds "words" in the text, so if you do not know exactly what "word" you find nothing.

Here is what the ad on the site says:

EXPLORE the fully-searchable index instantly by issue, keyword, title, contributor and more.

So it could be they used Adobe Acrobat to build an index of the whole catalog of issues or they could have built a pdf of just the subscriber indexes that came in the January issue every year. I don't know when that started though.

My guess is Acrobat which is pretty weak when it comes to indexing but does provide links to the results if it is done right. I doubt they paid to do a hand built index.

Trains.com has a nice online index of several magazines including MR and RMC.

Thank you for the link, William. This is very helpful.

Ben - we keep stuff like that because it works, and it becomes a shame to throw away because we paid a lot of money for the equipment. Getting new software for it? Who cares. :)

The C-64s are collector's items today. I'm not so sure about the printers, so hold on to the Amiga computers!

For those of you who are interested, I received an email from Kalmbach saying the MR DVD was shipped December 1 and to allow up to 10 days for delivery.

Installed my set this morning. I did the full install. 22Gb or therebouts I think. That way I don't have to constantly insert this or that DVD (there are 3 of them). Takes a while. I read 118 pages of my book while it chugged thru the install, lol.

Took a quick peek. Looks quite nice. Tried the search function by typing in 2-10-10-2 (my favorite loco) and it prompty came up with pages 36 and 37 of the August, 1967 issue. Double clkicked on that and there it was. Plans, a photo, and some info. I seem to remember the ATSF 2-10-10-2 was in MR Mag many years ago but it didn't turn up so perhaps its another senior moment, ha ha.

Anyone heard or read how (and if) they plan to offer updates for new issues? It stops at December 2009 so I would think there should be a way to add to it. Perhaps a CD or down loadable file every few years at a nominal fee.

I'm quite happy with it and glad I spent the $$$.

Ben

Try searching for ATSF 2-10-10-2. For some reason the thumbnail shows the Colorado & Southern Leadvile station, but it's a couple of pages after that (May '89).

I haven't seen anything on updates. My guess would be a lot will depend on how this sells.

Oh, I hope it will be here until christmas.
Such things take a while, crossing the pond and going through the customs.
