Model Railroad featured in Yahoo! article

The Yahoo article was stupid, typical media hype with the cutesy voice of the commentator.

The model on the other hand, well that is awesome!

We take this kind of thing for granted with our virtual railroading, but to see this done well in a model layout is really, really awesome.

Now that the kid found the derailed boxcar, he should do some spelunking and recover the car from the tunnel. :)

Thank you Jordon for the notice. As Model Railroader of well over 50 years any Model Railroad interests me. The wife and I visited a number of huge model railroads in Europe after I retired. I was never able to use a small VCR to get the realism of a layout like this. Shortly after I became a Trainz user I posted a web page of my Southern Model Railroad. In case anyone missed it here is the address. www.eisanfamily.com/smr.htm. Deisan

Is it just me, or does it look like it is running down the middle of the two tracks?
That is one superb layout though!

It could be that the camera lens is to the left of the center of the camera. Take a look at where the camera lens is on your iPhone and you'll see what I mean. The camera I use to take pictures of trains has the lens to the left of the camera's center also.

I'm guessing its a GoPro video camera which is made to be attached to motocross helmets and it swivels to any angle. so its either attached to a loco and is hanging off to the side. or it has its own rail car. its a pretty big camera so my guess is the later.

I gotta admit, I'm not much of a model railroader, but that's pretty cool...both the layout and the camera, that is. :)

I think it would be cool of Northlandz stuck a camera on a few of their trains. That would be an exhibit all its own.

My guess is that the camera is fixed to two flatcars, one on each track (as both tracks are clear), with a loco on one of the tracks propelling the rig. One just wants to rotate the view as you can in Trainz.

That's the camera that the Yahoo! article said was used. Also, there's a couple of sequels to that video, plus a mash-up featuring the Thomas the Tank Engine theme song.

I've seen one of these GoPro cameras in action. They're pretty cool but made really, really cheaply . The one I saw had troubles staying on because of a faulty switch. I had thought about getting one of those things at one point, but after seeing the issues the person had with the camera, I decided against it. After reading various review on them, I think I'll wait a bit longer. The reviews vary from awesome to less than favorable due to the inconsistent quality.

There are some cameras that can be mounted to railcars. I've seen those at the model train shows and the images are okay. In part I think is because the video was transmitted and the camera received power from the track. Every time the camera-train went over turnouts and lots of crossings, the image was a bit jumpy with lots of static. Given the technology we have today, I'm sure someone has already rigged up a better camera than those that I saw which writes to a small ssd-chip (jump drive/thumb-drive) instead of being broadcast through a UHF TV channel.

Thanks for sharing - I think the whole setup is awesome.
I guess the roof fans are there to cool things down and keep dust out ?
