Merging

Get over it
Before I do something that I might regret I have a few questions/thoughts.

1 - if I merge a session layer with a route layer I'm assuming, there's that word again, that the route layer will contain everything that was in the session. I'm thinking that this is a way to keep the route updated. Correct?

2 - after merging the session with the route will I still have a session in which to continue adding/changing or deleting items? Thank you.

I have never tried this type of merge, I don't see the point, but there could be a problem. The session holds the settings for added rules which may get lost if you merge. Safest way is to clone your route and try the layer merge with the clone. You can't lose anything then.

Alternatively, save your route to a CDP and then try it out.

Your second question, yes, you will have an empty session layer.

No problems Peter, merging the session layer into the route layer is the ONLY way I ever work in Surveyor. No exceptions!

I only ever load Surveyor via 'Edit Session', I only ever work on the Session Layer and every day or two (whenever I remember) I merge the session layer into the route layer. Far from leaving an 'empty' session layer the merge simply moves everything that the program wants on the Route layer while leaving everything the program wants on the Session layer where it is.

I have found this system absolutely bombproof...

I also only load the session for editing a route.

But I then immediately select the route layer before I do anything with a route.

It's good to develop a pattern that works and stick to it.

I didn't know that. It answers his question. I will remember it for the future if I ever get back into route making, something I am not all that keen on.

Thanks for all the replys. Andy - when you merge the session into the route what hppens to the route? Are all the changes that you made in the session then loaded into the route? I see this as a form of keeping the route updated with all the changes I do in session. Am I seeing this correctly. I also do all my work in edit session.

.....moves everything that the program wants on the Route layer while leaving everything the program wants on the Session layer where it is.

If you could expand on this, does this just mean signals, track etc to the Route and leaves consists, driver setup and so on alone.

Yes, but it's not as simple as that. A lot of stuff that you might think was route-related is actually saved to the session. Almost anything that was set up using a '?' button is session. The most obvious are anything industry interactive but there's lots of other stuff. I use Maddys YARN roads (actually the YARNish mods) but either way all the intersection data is saved to the session. I use mostly ATLS grade crossings and again all the set-up is saved to the session.

There are a couple dozen grade crossings already on my current WIP and I have no idea how many road intersections there are - have to be a hundred - and a couple of interactive industries. The first time I load 'Edit Route' the whole set-up on every one of those assets is toast and it all needs re-done. And obviously the farther the route progresses the worse it gets.

So I load Surveyor via 'Edit Session'. I never bother to change layers, I just plonk new buildings, ground textures, track whatever on the default Session Layer. When I merge the session into the route the software itself sorts it all out leaving whatever is 'session' on that layer and moving everything that should be on the route layer to where it belongs. What it all means is that I never lose session data and because I am not manually changing layers I never end up with something on the 'wrong' layer...

@soutm - yep, you've pretty much got it!

Andy ;)
