I have a friend in the states who remembers taking a long train journey back in 62, she went from Washington state to Indiana, via Illinois.

she is not sure but says she MAY have changed trains at Chicago.

now the question is what train would this have been on and would it have been steam powered?

she cant remember and were trying to find out, any help would be great.

Most likely, it wasn't steam powered. Sorry.:(

There is, however, a high probability that she changed trains in Chicago. In this case, She might have taken the Empire Builder to Chicago (that would have been Great Northern at the time).

Depending upon where she started in Washington State, she would have been on one of three trains operated by the GN (Empire Builder), NP (North Coast Limited), or MILW (Hiawatha). By 1962, all of these had been dieselized. If her origin was close enough that she might have departed Portland, OR (right on the State line), then there is a fourth possibility, the UP's City of Portland, and by 1962, it, too, was dieselized.

ok thanks for the info, ill get some more details when I talk to her next, she also said she remembered the train looking like "armour". dont know if thatd help. the milwaukee road hiawatha would be an easy one to recognize by the colour scheme id say, but ill find out where she started from, and put it here

some further info from my friemd about her trip, maybe itll help narrow what train it was down.

"i got on the train at the station in tacoma, washington... cool information!! did change trains in chicago, illinois. the train wasn't as "fancy", as i remember. didn't look the same. the route of the train was the northern-most route across the usa. i can remember montana going on and on. "
