Mapmaker 3i

this looks very interesting, but what is "srtm" data, and more importantly where can i get that for say a given area i want to derive trainz terrain from.

(in my case specifically the colfax, chicago park, grass valley and nevada city quadrangles i.e. those encompassing the route the nevada county narrow gauge railroad passed through (from memory, countours, and maps i have and or seen, i know where to put the tracks))

You wan't want to go for SRTM data as you got superior US NED at your disposal. :D

Basically we are talking about DEMs, Digital Elevation Models, which are coordinate based digital maps with terrain elevation as their only feature.

We distinguish DEMs by resolution and overall accuracy. Standard SRTM is 3 arc sec, about 60 x 90 metres. There is also SRTM 1 arc sec (20 x 30 m) but as far as I know incompatible with MapMaker. SRTM has been a Space Shuttle project. These are orbital DEMs. But there is also NED, a USGS terrestrial DEM, which goes up to 1/3 arc sec or even 1/9 arc sec. 1/3 arc sec is 10 m, the Trainz grid until TS2009.

To process NED DEMs you can take the manual approach with MicroDEM and HOG, which comes for free, or the automatic approach with TransDEM, which is payware.

so basically i still need to pay usgs $4.00 a quad for the dem data and either get how to make microdem and hog work for me through my thick head, or spring for transdem?

i'm not suggesting this is unreasonable, just something i've not been able to get around to yet, and don't know when i will be.

thanks geophil, i got the download read through the manual just one question, were can i get the data i need? it says i can get it from nasa, could u link it for me? also a quick explanation on how to download the infrmation i need?

thank you in advance

I posted the NASA SRTM link in your other thread.

Not sure about the map requirements for MapMaker. I think it was UTM/WGS84. Georeferencing is somewhat specific there. It probably helps if your map clippings are already aligned with the UTM grid. You could try TerraServer USA. That's UTM/NAD83 but the difference is negligible for this purpose.

If you find MapMaker to be too much of a challenge, there is always TransDEM...

hey geophil thanks for the link in the other post, i found the terraserver site last nite downloaded some STRM data but having problems figuring out how to get it all to work lol, i would love to have transdem but at the mo im unemployed and cant afford it yet.:(
