You wan't want to go for SRTM data as you got superior US NED at your disposal.
Basically we are talking about DEMs,
Digital Elevation Models, which are coordinate based digital maps with terrain elevation as their only feature.
We distinguish DEMs by resolution and overall accuracy. Standard SRTM is 3 arc sec, about 60 x 90 metres. There is also SRTM 1 arc sec (20 x 30 m) but as far as I know incompatible with MapMaker. SRTM has been a Space Shuttle project. These are orbital DEMs. But there is also NED, a USGS terrestrial DEM, which goes up to 1/3 arc sec or even 1/9 arc sec. 1/3 arc sec is 10 m, the Trainz grid until TS2009.
To process NED DEMs you can take the manual approach with MicroDEM and HOG, which comes for free, or the automatic approach with TransDEM, which is payware.
