Making Cabcars drivable.

The Cabcar in question is the Metra Cabcar that is available on the DLS. I want to make it so that it is drivable. How do I add sounds, and a cab to it?

I have TS: Mac

Any help?

If there is no way to do this, then is there a version of the Metra Cabcar that can be driven?

Chicago Metro bi-level push-pull cab car II,<kuid:522774:100003>

That's a compromise, I used a "silent engine" sound but it is classed as an engine so drivable by itself, which the prototype is not. It uses;

Bilevel push-pull cabcar interior,<kuid:522774:1151>

Which is actually a "kitbash", a cabview made with pieces and parts from other cabviews. "Chicago Metro" is a fictional railroad that I made up, not affiliated with Metra. If you're a big Metra fan you're welcome to clone and reskin it for Metra.

If you want to see it in action in its fictional paint on the fictional route;

Chicago Metro V1.2,<kuid2:522774:100027:2>

That's the route, and this;

Chicago Metro V1 Tourist Scoot,<kuid:522774:100057>

Is a "ride along" in an AI controlled scoot ("scoot" = commuter train, not sure if that's general US slang or unique to Chicago ghetto rats) starting at Madison & Canal, running forward out to Bellwood, then reversing to back into Madison Street station (whatever they're calling it these days, Ogilve Center?) then reversing again to run out to Galewood on the Milwaukee line. When it starts backing up change from the engine to the cabcar, the headlight on the engine goes out and the headlight on the cabcar comes on. That was another compromise I hope to fix someday, I had to disable the tail lights to make the backup headlight work, and so far can't get working taillights on the front of the E8.

Check the cabs in the push-pull trains (loco on back end of consist) on the Harlem Route. The Metro-North train in that instance does what you want. Careful, as there are also some Electric MU trains in that collection of scenerios!

Conversely, I have a complaint about diesel noises from the New Haven FL9 locomotive when operating in third rail territory (south of the town of Southeast, near Brewster - formerly called Brewster North Station). The New Haven FL9, also a Genisys (sp) in either Amtrak or Metro North paint job can run on either its own diesel engine and Generator, or straight off the 600 volt DC third rail (with the diesel engine shut down)!

That would be even more difficult than making a drivable cab car that won't move under its own power. Some kind of script maybe, so you could change between sound sets linked to the pantograph control or something?

About Control Trailers, back in the day it was rather a simple idea of simply reducing all the engine power values to 0 or 0.1 and leaving the cab alone,
as such the control trailer wouldnt move on its own. sounds set as silent of course.. and the related engine in the consist would throttle up according to the control trailer just as they do with any other engine in multiple unit

I'll have to take a shot at cloning an engine spec and trying that someday, for right now it works okay, and the more important thing to me is getting the headlight - taillight position switch working somehow. What I have now when changing to the cab car the headlight on the engine goes out and the headlight on the cab car come on, change back to the engine and the cab car light goes out, engine light comes on. I've tried using PEV attachment maker to add two taillights to the front of the engine, but the first taillight comes on when the headlight is on and the second don't work.

Running in reverse with the headlight and ditchlights off and the taillights on. Got the headlight swapping part working, can't get taillights and headlights to play right with each other.

It's been a while since I looked at this (so I'm not sure if this has changed since) but when we did the research for that route, Metro North only operated their dual power locos on electric power when required by law - which is in Grand Central and the tunnel heading for it. They ran on diesel power in all other circumstances, even if there was a live 3rd rail present.

The Harlem Line as represented in Trainz does not have this tunnel section in it - so having the locos run from diesel power all the time suited the map.

I see that the trains are still running on the LEFT HAND TRACK on the former C&NW line. The CTA Lake Street (Green Line) 'elevated' train in the first picture is running on the Right Hand Track.
