Making a loco dead in tow

Learning... slowly!
I mostly drive on trainz with DCC Control. Whenever I have 2+ locos on the same train, Trainz seems to consider them to be working in multiple and both put out equal power etc. However, what if I want to simulate a loco being dead in tow? Is there any way to 'turn off' a loco so that it's just being hauled by the other(s)?

For example, if I want to recreate a steam engine failing and being rescued, can I make sure that the failed loco remains failed whilst it's being hauled away?

You can make a non-powered version of any loco, if allowed by the license, but you cannot transform a powered unit to a dummy during the course of an operating session. Using advanced scripting you can substitute a powered with a dummy (under a different kuid) and trigger that script when the "breakdown" occurs. The ailing loco would need to be discretely identified for the script to find it. Also things get very tricky if the loco is coupled during the breakdown changeout, the dummy may need to be offset from the consist.

Another thought is to manually remove the powered and place the dummy using the quickdrive consist and new train facilities, but again the again transformation would have to occur decoupled (unless the whole consist were substituted).

You mentioned a steam engine, I am not sure if getting the valve gear to work in the dummy version is going to be possible or not, but its another factor in this.

In theory, couldn't you set up a locomotive script like the ones at World of Trains, where it's able to be turned on and off, and have it so that when the engine is powered off, it access one config, and when its on, access another?

To achieve the effect you want, it would require major scripting. JR has a few locomotives, both freeware and payware, that are equipped with this script which allows you to isolate and/or turn your locomotive off and on.
