I get this: Interactive 3D Renderer initialization failed. Please check your device settings by using the -H command line option. What do I do?

Open a command Window, assuming you have installed Gmax to C:\Gmax type the following C:\Gmax\gmax.exe -H then hit enter, you then get the Gmax driver setup, select the driver you want to use there, DirectX is probably safest. If not C:\Gmax substitute the path where it is.

To open a Command window Start menu > Run > Cmd > Enter

But it's doing it when I start Gmax for the first time, I just downloaded it today, and no matter what driver I choose it gives the error. Is there something wrong with my drivers?

If Trainz is working OK in directX and OpenGL there shouldn't be anything wrong unless you have some odd type of graphics card or its the Win7 permissions problem.

If it's win 7 or 8 Try to installing it as Administrator or running it as administrator, Right Click Run as administrator and don't install in program files.
