I started with TR2006 and have never got the hang of building a map with any of the games. Hopefully with Tane I might get it. Would someone please let me know what free software there is to build a realistic terrain with Hog marks?
I'm on a Disablility income so limited on funds. Have played with TransDerm and Hog but not sure how to make them work with Tane.

Hog format has issues due to the TIGER files not lining up and the textures have issues in T:ANE - you might end up doing lots of repairs.

T:ANE has been updated to 2.6 recently. If you have 2.5x you can upgrade if you've purchased it in the last year for about $9.99

What I recommend for map making is to download a route and open it for editing to see how the author did stuff and try to emulate the things you like. I happened to be mentored by GFisher (George Fisher) in this manner. It might take a few routes to get the hang of it which it did for me, but keep in mind too that nothing is lost except for disk space and time.

You mean TranzDEM has been updated to 2.6

TranzDEM is the Trainz (T:ANE compatible) version of TransDEM which will do terrain modelling for you from official Digital Elevation Model data that is available from various sources. It is not free.

Yes. That's what I meant. My cat had climbed into my lap and across my arms as I was trying to type and lost my thought. ???!

Route building is practice, practice, practice. After spending a day adding assets, I added a siding, threw some points in and added some locos. My points are terrible, even after using a ruler and the grid lines. I just have to practice, practice and practice. As John says, its just time and disk space. :o

And then I spend time looking at other route-builders work with real envy. Really, I do. I notice the buildings, the grass, the fence splines, the elevations and ditches.

I haven't made a river yet, but I am looking real close at a few layouts to get the idea.

Thanks for the input. Have a problem now with downloading Dem files from usgs. the microdem Will not see them as valid.

That is probably due to the file-type change. See if you can get the Geo-Tiffs and not the arc-grid format. It could also be a size issue since the DEMs are now 1 arc-second slices, which can be very, very large. I've seen some as large as 500MB when uncompressed from the zip.

With TransDEM 2.5 and up, the program now is available in a 64-bit version which not only makes use of a larger amount of memory, it also uses multiple CPU threads to be able to handle the larger amount of data.
