London calling...

Haha. It makes for an amusing mental (literally?) picture indeed. Kick the door open and loose a couple off! I'll have to ensure that it stays out of my mind next time I'm out.

As for the walking, I'd consider myself a bit of an expert in that field, just slower. I can walk for miles without a bother...

With a few beverages I presume ?

Errrrm, you've lost me there I'm afraid.

More Limpicks. Watched women's boxing which was really rather good. One had a fierce south paw which would have sent me to the deck after the first punch judging by the slow motion replay of it connecting with her opponent's face! More likely I'd have run away.

Back on the tube tonight and much more crowded than last week. Astonishingly, a queue was being managed at Green Park for the interchange subway between the Victoria and Jubilee lines - the latter takes you to Stratford where the Games are. I've never seen this before! Very good humoured crowds and many of them involved, some way or other, with the Olympics.

I've been a bit of a cynic myself in the past about this, but I have to say there's a huge feelgood factor at the moment in London (not sure if rest of GB?) Maybe it has something to do with the medal totals?!!

Paul, there is a huge feelgood factor right through the country. Thank you to every Londoner, and I say Paulsw2 for the next Mayor of London. You could beat Boris handsdown

posted from a Plymouth to Bristol Temple Meads HST with the carriage temperature at boiling point as the air conditioning is not working. Thank you for a very comfortable trip first great Western (I'm glad I will be getting off at Taunton)

I think even the biggest cynical anti-Londoner would be a bit hard nosed to not acknowledge the acheivements of the British team itself. That venue is a veritable medal factory for Team GB at the moment, and you can hardly fail to admire such a team effort. I've certainly seen evidence of that attitude shift up in the grim north of England amongst some people, although the notion that everyone in Blighty is hugely behind the endeavour itself, which the media seems to want to portray, is undoubtedly if not exactly a false one, then at least something of an exaggeration; there are still plenty of people who object to the reinforcement of, in particular, the north south divide which the 2012 Olympics has engendered, especially when the country is in dire need of an influx of people spending money, and not just in the capital.

Some of the love has spread past Watford however, up in Manchester yesterday, there were a few Brazilian supporters wandering about playing drums and various other bits of percussion in a good natured bit of fun, but they were scattered about, and were not in the kind of numbers you more typically see when there is a major international footy match at Old Trafford or somewhere else in town. Still, it is a hell of a trek from Rio to the grim north, so somewhat understandable.

Don't forget many of the gold medels were won OUTSIDE of London, e.g. the sailing here in Weymouth & Portland.

That is true, but in the ironically nautical parlance which permeates the English language, the flagship events tend to be in the stadium in London.

Somehow female boxing makes me wince - sorry pfx! Don't know much about that at all thankfully as I prefer my women to be less contentious and aren't they in danger, ehrm, of damaging very obvious body parts?!

Notice british press are hailing her a a great british boxer, whilst they disown the boxers from Northern Ireland who lost - losing Irish Boxers.

Mind you, if a certain referendum in a certain country goes a certain way, this could be the last hurrah for Team GB. In Rio it might be Team Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

Team WEN.

That sounds familiar for some reason.

I forecast now amigacooke that your wondering referndum will be a negative. In submitting agenda matters to the public the governing administration in Edinburgh got thousands of responses and you know what? The majority want to still be in GB. Of course they ignored it because it wasn't the answer they wanted - so much for wanting opinions of the electorate? (!)Scotland ain't gong anywhere! And the same happened on the marriage issue by the way.

So folks keep 2014 in mind and I am so confident that if I am proved wrong I will donate £50 to a railway preservation group and produce a receipt!! Nah, on second thoughts..who-ho, £100

Hey, domsarto. Puzzled at you saying she was regarded a being of no importance (not by you) stance as she was Northern Ireland. When I got up this morning that was still part of GB like Scotland, Wales, England. Good eavens have I missed something?!

You should really read my comments again.

Lets see, Ms K Tayler somes from Bray, Co Wicklow, ROI now I know that all brits still like to claim ROI as part of the UK but its not and the sooner that the brits get over this the better for them and for us.
Boxing on this island is controlled by a single body both north and south of the border. we have northern Ireland boxers wearing the "green jersey". and fighting under the tricolour. As soon as they have lost a fight, the british press straight away claims that such and such Irish Boxer was beating.
But when Ms Taylor won, english papers both tabloid and broadsheet claimed her as a british boxer, which she is not. Now I do ot think than anywhere in my previous comment I ever claimed that Northern Ireland was not part of the UK, at the moment it is but in the near future it will either become part of the Republic or go Independent. as will Scotland if england ever gave them a choice. We all know that Wales would never leave englands peticoats.

(no apologies for not using Uppercase E when mentioning england)

Rob, I can speak from experience in saying that's an absolutely ridiculous comment but if you want to put on a sandwich board with that on it and stand at the top of Grafton Street, let me know and I'll try and save you from the lynching.

The people you may refer to are a tiny minority, most of whom live in the well-heeled areas of Dublin and its suburbs. These people probably would like to be British and are generally referred to as West Brits
by everyone else, West Brit being a derogatory term.

As for the media comments (and don't let's start an argument about the sovereignty of various parts of these islands as that will only get the thread locked) what Dominic says is completely true. There are boxers based in Norn Iron who consider themselves 100% Irish and fight as a member of the Irish team. Similarly, there are Norn Iron boxers who consider themselves 100% British and who would fight for the British team. Sadly, the lazy media don't bother too much about these hard facts and mix it up to suit success or failure. Anyone from the outlying provinces such as Scotland should be all too familiar with successful sportsmen and women being labelled British or Scottish depending on how they fare.

Lazy journalism.

Let's try to find the facts here.

The Guardian seems to be innocent.
The Daily Mail seems to be on the ball.
The Sun are getting it right.
The Mirror know their onions.
The Times I can't check as they want money.
The Independent are blameless.

Ah, now we have the culprit. The Daily Telegraph.

So it seems that one newspaper making a mistake which it retracted the same day is conclusive proof. Hmmmmm.

Now, let me see:

I am half Irish (mother's side from Co Antrim, Northern Ireland) and half English. I have always lived in England but consider myself both British and Irish. I have never been able to understand the naked hatred and bigotry that exists among the minority across the Irish Sea, for the majority of Irish people are probably the friendliest you would ever meet on the planet! For sure, the Celtic temperament makes for hot-headedness, but that makes for some of the most intersting stories you will hear related around a rustic celtic peat-burning fireside!

There are some real horror stories from the past concerning Britannia's cruel treatment of Irish people during the potato famine, the Easter rising etc and many atrocities carried out in the name of Irish people against Britain (the Harrods bombing, the sectarian murders of many people who played no part in the "troubles" or the murders of British soldiers sent to stop the wholesale bloodshed to name but a few.)

Thankfully, we have a peace that is holding, apart from the few ne'er do wells who will not bury the past. Heck! Even Queen Elizabeth and Martin McGuinness have put the past to bed and shaken hands to make history!

The time has come to say "Kiss Me, I'm Irish!" and embrace the world.
