Likely a newbie type question about TrainzUtil.exe

Within the last few days I bought a bundle of Trainz addon DLC, Classic Cabon City, Murchison 2, and Settle & Carlisle. When I attempt to install them from steam, I get a small window informing me that TrainzUtil.exe is running, but nothing else. I let the computer sit and run over night with the CPU utilization sitting at 100% and in the morning nothing had changed. Today I used the task manager to close the various Trains programs from running and insured that the base Trainz 12 still runs. I change the options in the Developer section I believe to display database information and restarted the install of one of the DLC packs. I have now had the computer sitting for a little over 4 hours with a half dozen "DOS" looking command prompt windows open but with no text messages displayed at all. The CPU has been sitting at 100% the entire time. Am I missing something or is there another method short of running the DLC packs from Steam to get the content put in place?

No progress messages is sort of disconcerting as I don't know if anything is actually being done or not. My Steam games are installed to an external USB drive which has worked fine up to this time. I don't see any flashing of the activity light on the drive, which leads me to think the actual database files are not being accessed at all during this long period of time.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi thinshaw,

I don't have the steam version but I think downloading DLC content will be the same as the version direct from N3V.

Open trainz and start it up. On the screen with routes / railyard ect go to the Main Menu tab (top left).
Select Options. a pop up box will display.
In General Settings go down and make sure that "Automatically download DLC updates" is selected. if not place a tick in the box.

Exit trainz. When you restart trainz there should appear some boxes regarding downloading the content that you purchased. They will be stacked on top of each other. You can move the top ones out of the way to see the others underneath.

This will install the content direct into trainz. When completed you can deselect the "Automatically download DLC updates" box if you wish.

Hope this helps, Andrew.

It's normal to see those little DOS windows appear with the developer option set.

It's a good idea to do this anyway. Many of us use these windows as an indicator when it's safe to shutdown or restart the computer after using Trainz. When these windows have closed after closing Trainz it's safe to do other system-related tasks.

In the future use caution when closing those DOS windows using the task manager. If the are open, it's usually an indication that Trainz is doing things, and closing these windows can corrupt the assets.tdx database file, and doing so will cause Trainz to repair (Update database message) on start-up.
