Hello all, I have been looking for a new gaming laptop to run trainz on and I think the lenovo y510p could be a good candidate. I seems like it should be able to handle large routes with lots of detail at good frames rates. Also, I rellay like because it is chaep. The model I'm looking at is $879. Here is a link to the lenovo page. http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y510p/

I would love to hear what you guys think about how this laptop would handle trainz!
Thanks, Oliver

P.S. Happy Easter everyone!

You should target a laptop designated specifically for gaming and not multimedia, because of their heat dissipation capabilities and superior framerates. TS12, which requires laptop fans continuously to the extent they are audible, even in Surveyor, is best run with a tiered cooling system that progressively starts and modulates fans to accommodate the gaming load. Ergo TS12 will slowly cook and prematurely fail standard laptops, setting aside what TANE may have in store. Here is a good article on gaming laptops http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2020688,00.asp. I think you need to bring your budget up at least $500 to do this properly. The question is not so much how it will run but how long.

I need to stay in my budget because it's my birthday present so I think I desktop might be a better choice. What are some so decent desktops for trainz at about $800-$500 or less? Also, the Lenovo y500 is listed in the article as well. Will that preform better than the Lenovo y510p? On another note, this MSI model which was on list looks nice too http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GX60-3BE-...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00DT70G9G

For a desktop I would look at TS12 minimum and recommended specs and try to get the same for TANE and see what in your budget covers that.

Just so you know, I spent $1700 on a Dell XPS17 in 2011 summer, and even now TRZ12 with SpeedTreez slags it down like crazy (re Appalachian Route). Without them things, I do okay. Personally, I'm wary of Lenovo given a spotty past.

But what you're looking at (Y510P), I'd bump up just for the separate wireless card and higher-res screen. I'm sorta kicking myself for not dropping another hundred to go from 1600*900 to 1920*1080, but your money, your call, your pain or gain.

I dropped about $500 on my Gateway and I get around 20 FPS in Trainz with the stock on board graphics card, and around 30-40 after dropping another $100 in just graphics card. Then again, I didn't get that much in terms of a graphics card.

Honestly, a real gamer allocates $500 just for the graphics card. The MSI looks better than the lenovo, but get the GE instead of the GX version because it has the Intel/NVidia combo which is always what Auran/N3V specs out. At least this one has a decent dedicated card, the GTX 765M ought to make for decent framrates.

We are on the cusp of getting a new version of Trainz, so you may want to have more headroom if you want to go to Tane.

Also, if you buy a non-gaming laptop, quickly get into the habit of backup up the computer because one day 2 to 3 years down the road that motherboard will have a heat stroke.
