Layout Bashing or how to get more enjoyment out of Trianz Model Railroad....

Has the extra scenery had any measurable effect on frame rates when you drive the layout?

I will be running some tests this weekend using the same loco/consist once on the regular unmodified Brazemore Layout and then on my modded version to get a more accurate fps comparison......stay tuned....
Update: See next page for the details

And the results are..........................

Above: The test train, 2 BN SD60s pulling a 30 car unit train of 4 bay hoppers filled with coal

Now my TMR17 settings/sliders are pretty much maxed out and using 8x Antialiasing, high shadow quality, shadow resolution 2048, texture detail high, post processing high, multiple render threads checked, PhysX simulation checked, process objects behind cameras checked, texture streaming not checked, full screen 1920x1080 resolution, maximum draw distance 4000m, scenery detail ultra, tree detail ultra, post processing high

Environment: Summer June 15th (wanted full foliage effect)

PC Specs: AMD FX-6300@ 3.5, 16GB Ram, GTX-1060 (6GB GPU), 32" Samsung monitor @ 1920x1080..

So with that the above being said I ran my test train on the regular Brazemore Yard layout letting it do a complete figure 8 with the fps going from 20-55 fps.

Next I did same train at same starting point on my modified Brazemore layout and surprisingly only had a fps drop of no more than 2-4 fps and worth mentioning was the frame rate drop occurred more in the full foliage areas then by any of my addons that did not have foliage by them such as a lot of trees. This happened before as well. TMR17 seems to have more resources being used for the trees especially on Ultra setting which makes sense because of the high detail but as far as my buildings and scenes very little affect on fps.

And if you were to adjust the angle of the train by the slightest you could get a boost of up to 20 fps by viewing it slightly differently as it makes its way around the layout. Again l
owest frame rates occurred in areas of high tree density for brief time regardless of which layout.
A real surprise was the lack of the stuttering effect with the train, even at lower fps it still looked smooth. Now I am pretty positive if the environment setting was in December (winter with bare trees) the fps would be much higher overall in those areas packed with trees which is only logical since the detail would be dropped considerably on them.

That answers the question pretty comprehensively. It will interest anyone else wanting to improve their routes in the same way. Thanks for doing the scientific thing. Are the trees mostly Speedtreez or the "billboard" type?

Good question, the trees came with the Brazemore Yard layout, I copied a few of them for some of the areas but they were all native to the layout.....but they seem to resemble speedtreez

(Aside from your uncanny sense for detail) your prolific-ness might get the-better of you! Your "Layout room" may not be able to contain your enthusiasm for too much longer. May need to "breakdown" a wall into the living-room soon!!! :hehe:

Might have to start looking for some more MRR to modify shortly since this one is getting to capacity.....hopefully I can squeeze a little more out of it.;)

Next on the list.....well there is this little wooded space with an opening next to the Budweiser Advertising office building that I just noticed...I think every model RR has a junk yard or derelict rundown area...it might even be a requirement to have at least one on a model RR...I added 2 run down barns and detailed the area with some good quality junk...

The barrels have open tops so I decided to put them over some campfires to get a nice smoking effect going....still a work in progress...need to add some people etc...

Well I hope your satisfied jkinzel, looks like the local demolition crew has just arrived to start the clean up.....

No intervention, just right to business and over the weekend. That's going to cost somebody big $.

I have enjoyed watching things progress as you work on your layout. Thank you for sharing.

Regards,

Thanks for the comments guys, its appreciated and keeps me motivated...with that being said...another common scene on MRR are railfans and campers:

Above: Now are the couple on the left looking at the coming stack train or the fawn with 2 does ????

Well probably the guy is checking the train out and the girl the deer....(and yes the dog is animated.....as you can see it in different positions)

See world... doing Model Trains is not about a train going around in circles within a lifeless world... at least not the cyber-kind! :D On the contrary, we represent life... and trains, as Railhead001 here so admirably demonstrates!

-Very beautiful nature scenes! Makes me want to go campin' again...

Small update....I wanted to model a dumpster delivery/removal truck so I thought this Mack flatbed would fit the job:

I would have used all Waste Management dumpsters but unfortunately the height when raised is pretty inaccurate for the truck as you can see below...mini dumpster effect

Trial and error goes a long way

You can hold down shift when raising assets to make it a more precise, instead of adjusting it 1 meter at a time, it adjusts it .05 meters. It's very helpful.

WOW.....................I had posted a question regarding the height tool a while ago and was told you could not do adjusting to it.............MeowRailroad THANK YOU !!!!
