Latest content creator guide is not TRS 2006

latest guide is the trainzdev wiki......... pdf is old format .. wiki is for today :p
And a pain in the backside (at least for me). I find it difficult to get in there, dead slow when I get in and I can never find what I want as often it doesn't yet exist. I for one prefer a pdf, which I can refer to offline, anyday.

I think the Trainzwiki would be better if it was constructed around the format of the CCG. I agree with Teddytoot that the current Wiki is difficult and fragmented, however a Wiki version of the CCG would allow user input that the rigid format of a PDF does not allow. Copy the PDF pages to the Wiki and build the links.

Currently we need both for any useful information.

Then you might like to read the post Chris left today . I've never had a single problem getting in or reading the content .

Begs the question ... If it does not exist in the Wiki , how will a pdf help ???

Just a quick update: The TrainzDev wiki is being integrated with the TrainzOnline wiki, and can now be found at http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php5/TrainzDev_Wiki . This update brings a few notable advantages, including removing the joomla toolbars, allowing external links directly to wiki pages, Planet Auran authentication and automatic sign-in for the Trainz embedded browser.

I'll take a .pdf any day, particularly since my Trainz machine is not (and never never never never will be) connected to the Internet. I (and others, based on recurring posts on this forum) do all of my downloading on a separate machine. The hassle of downloading an updated .pdf on a regular basis is far less than that of rebuilding a machine and restoring work which has been trashed by a virus, trojan, etc. etc. Supposedly there is software out there which when properly configured can automatically generate a .pdf of a wiki on the host machine on a scheduled basis.

I'll also take the .pdf over the wiki anyday. I find the wiki difficult. It's kind of like reading a book online and I just don't do that. I usually like to sit somewhere away from my computer and study the CCG and then sometimes, I need to refer to the CCG when I'm building something and would rather have the CCG in front of me while I'm working on it. Also, when I was learning the TRS2004 CCG, I would make a habit of taking it with me whereever I went so that I could study if the opportunity presented itself.
Just my humble opinion, which won't go very far.

I totally agree with you, I have been a long critic of the DevWiki and the disadvantages it has. I printed out the various CCGs and this gives me the opportunity to keep the printout next to my PC to look up any query I need to see. Why should I have to go online if I do not want/need to if the latest version (DevWiki) were in a PDF format.

Also, I can read the printout, which is in a folder, sitting in the bath, laying in bed, sitting down and sipping whatever I fancy, try doing this with the devilish cumbersome TrainzDevWiki :o.

Also my humble opinion.

I actually prefer the WIKI. I've never read the CCG like a book. Typically, I'm searching for some specific example or tag, and the WIKI is much faster for me than waiting for that *&^% pdf to load, then either scrolling through the pages or guessing the right search criteria to find what I need.
And yes, in one of my environments my content creating machine is not on the network, and so I look at the WIKI on a different machine. It's nice in that I don't have to tab between windows; I can have the WIKI up on one machine, and the content I'm working on the other machine.
Now that the WIKI doesn't require a login, it's even that much more convenient (imho, of course!)

Each to his own. I print out the pdf so that I don't have to page through it on my computer. Then, as Vinnybarb said, I can peruse it at my leisure and since it's in printed form, I can make notes to myself in the margins.

Too true :D The wiki is much faster and to my mind better organised .. but if you're using a pdf reader then the free PDF-Xchange Viewer in both 64/32 bit is faster loading , more secure and with an much smaller footprint than the abysmal crud from Adobe.

In my experience, the problem with the Wiki is that pretty much whenever I've searched for info in it (usually info for repairing stuff rather then creating stuff) it's not there.

I can make notes to myself in the margins.
Yep, that's a definite advantage to having a hardcover copy! And, the WIKI doesn't have all the information (especially the examples) of the earlier CCGs. On the other hand, CM will open any local asset, so there's a pretty good set of examples there. And, other areas of the WIKI are more complete than the CCGs were - such as script messaging or (g)max material settings. So, at the moment, I think both the CCGs and the WIKI compliment each other.

It's not a repair guide ... .

Sheeeesh :o.

Where the hell do you think the information for the new versions of TS are? In the UTC manual or guide perhaps? Or in a bird fancier's parrot breeding guide perhaps? Where else would one look for TS09/10 info to repair items to use in these versions?

It seems, some people reply here in this forum just for replying sake or to get their post count up but not to give out any sensible or fruitful advise. As is seen above!

No wonder people post what they post about the sad state of affair of this forum, how hard/easy would it have been to include an answer to the poster's reply. Or NOT to reply to this poster at all if no answer is known for that reply.

Sarcasm has its own place somewhere else but NOT here in this forum!

My rave of the day.
