L&A back shops and engine service

Slave to my route
I didn't want to hijack another thread with the pictures of my Levi& Appalachian back shops so I'll start a new thread. I've been asked to share the route so this is just a small piece to the whole route.

This is TransDem DRM of Levi/Booneville KY. and the idea was to create a fictional line from where my family is from north to Cincinnati where we moved to. Much of the larger part of the route followed along an abandoned grade out of Beattyville to Winchester. Leaving Winchester it somewhat follows the L&N and other abandoned grades to Maysville. It crosses the Ohio river to Aberdeen Oh. and then connects with a 4 track east/west mainline. From there it is west to Cincinnati and the end of the route I hope :hehe:.

My absolute favor thing in railroad operations is locomotive servicing. This is where I started the L&A and the idea was as this is the company HQ this is where all the equipment was serviced and it just kept growing. The Levi/Boonville area grew too although it is a smoky dirty place, but the population is well paid.

The idea for the dual turntable came from early blueprints of the Cincinnati Union Terminal service area. As you can see the valley that Levi sits in is small so I crammed in the back shops and used another turntable between the boiler house and erecting shop that the locomotives could be transferred to and from.

After an attack of route cancer I had to cannibalize an older backup in order to save the L&A service area. So with this hacked up part of the L&A route I will make available to the public. I know for sure that the coaling station is NOT on the DLS and I believe it is the Cowboy's and I think it is still available. Let me know of missing dependencies and I'll do my best to help. Be kind as this is my first public release of any route I have done.

Dave,

This is absolutely terrific! You've done a really great job with the precise track laying and layout of the buildings.

What track did you use? It seems not to float above the surface like so many rail-only assets do. When I need to use those, I don't bother and instead use modified YARN roads, which I removed traffic and modified the texture to stone or concrete. Then I use my favorite track which buries its self just to about rail height in the surface. I discovered this feature by accident when I ran some track through the road, and now utilize this feature for this purpose.

I'll take a look at your construction as I look forward to seeing your route. :)

I love this so much, but the big open asphalt areas should have random stuff on them (wheel sets, scrap piles, parked cars, whatever) and some more texture variation.

Try Making it your own by adding details yourself XD. You seem to have some ideas, I bet you could make it look good ~.^. Just start by searching the DLS for words like "Wheel", "Scrap", "Parked", "Axle", "Boiler", etc etc.... The assets are out there if you go digging ^^.

The only objects I couldn't find (using DLS, TKI and Google) are some of your creations.

I am not in the mood right now, I start working when I am hit with inspiration, and work until I think of something new to work on.

And you seeing room for improvement in anothers work isn't inspiration? No, Im not being sarcastic either. I actually struggle alot with what I think most people think of as "Natural or Organic Originality". The flip side of this is that I'm very good at taking something I've seen and changing it or improving on it until its barely recognizable as something before hand. Point being, you obviously had some ideas about placing some things you felt were missing, so don't sell yourself short. Even if you never release whatever you make, making things even just as experimentation is a good way to practice working in the sim to make things in general.....

Anyway, Good Luck with whatever you do,

You can still load up and take a look at the route. Some of these missing items may be things like grass or bushes which won't impact the route other than appearance. The grass splines look like those by JVC. I can't confirm the KUIDS right now because I'm still validating content and don't want to touch CM until that completes.

<kuid2:86661:144034:1> is Steam Donkey 1 (Link found using TKI).
All kuids having an userID of 126773 are TransDEM textures, and could be removed.

TheCowboy's coaltower (kuid:79097:100222) is still available (today) at the WaybackMachine. A copy of the coaltower (only config.txt is updated) is available at the DLS <kuid:682163:101196>.

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. Don't worry about the Trans Dem textures as they have been covered over a long time ago :p.

Thanks for finding Cowboys coaling tower as it is a personal favorite and I hope to see it live on. I'll send Bob O's Comic Book shop up to the DLS soon.

I must agree the area needs a lot more clutter is just a lot of the scrap on the DLS doesn't fit the way I would like. I hope with TANE there will be more clutter items to play with. I'm hoping for some old towmotors and trailers to place around the shop moving parts from one point to another. I thought covering the area with cobblestones would give the old-time effect of a finished area and not a mud hole :hehe:. The place needs to be dirtier and again I have high hopes for TANE.

Now if anyone has color pictures of backshops could you maybe post a link to help me "dirty up the place"?;)
