Kawasaki M8 in the works

I mean getting real textures from real trains on youtube videos. I just took a screenshot of a clip from an M8 in youtube, then put that same screenshot in paint.net. Once that screenshot from the youtube video is in paint.net, I crop the part of the image that I want. Then I put that cropped image in sketchup so I can use it as a texture for my Sketchup project. I never really thought of this but that is another good reference. Now I think what I have to do is find a good video at 720p or 1080p that has exactly what I want.

I hope everyone didn't think I abandoned this project. I took a break from route building. Decided to do a little work on the M8.

Looking nice so far. Now you just need to touch up the sides with some extra detail ex. rivets, MTA/CDOT text and logos. For the running numbers, how are you with the ARN scripts?

Thanks. I am not so good at adding photo realistic textures such as the logos to the train. I have no experience with ARN scripts? What is that by the way? Hopefully this summer when I have more time, I can see about bringing this into trainz. It looks like the roof and the undercarriage of the M8 needs some work though.

You do not need to write any ARN scripts as there is one build into trains all you need is the right texture placement and naming and trainz does the rest - look at the world of trainz tutorial about this

Malik, ARN = automatic running numbers. And NSWGR, thank you for letting me know. But no one used them for the content I frequently use; most of the content that has random running numbers has an ARN script included.

Plus, if u need to make running numbers, you can't do that in sketchup. It can export though, but the file names are wrong. Best to work it in a different 3D editor. I would recommend blender. If you need assitance, PM me. Also I do warn you that with the limited space on u hard drive, it can cause to crash. Best to upload it in the cloud.

More work on the M8. I started working some more on the roof around where the pantographs are placed. Stay tuned for more screenshots in my Major Tri State Area Project thread.

Everyone. I am happy to say that my Metro North M8 train is now complete in Sketchup.:) Now we have some new Metro North/CDOT rolling stock. Now that step 1 is done, time to go on to step 2. Would it be possible for someone to help me or give me instructions on how to get the M8 from Sketchup to Trainz. I would like to make this a piece of rolling stock/locomotive? Here are some pictures of the finished product. Even though it is done in sketchup, it still needs pantographs, an engine sound, and some work on the headlights. That can probably be done in the content creator plus.

Don't forget - the M8s come in pairs, and only one in each pair actually has a pantograph.

Also, it doesn't look like you've modeled the interior yet.

Third, RubyTMIX seems to be the accepted software for converting Sketchup objects to Trainz meshes.

Finally, I would suggest using <kuid:612368:100317> as the destination textures. You'll want to create an additional sign mesh as a black rectangle to attach to the displays.

I used the rubytmix and in trainz, I get an error saying unable to load mesh file.

First, I went to import content and then located the directory for the M8 and I got an error message. So I used the content creator plus and located the im file for the mesh, after that, I committed the M8 and got this error message. I don't think I know how to properly export the M8 into Trainz.

Scottbe8: I am not sure if I will work on the B car, but if I do, it will be a while until that is complete. If I can get this M8 car into Trainz, I will run it in the formation of A-B-B-A.

I think I know how to fix that, on the last pic, you have the 'women' in the way. Remove it, and try it again.

I'm sorry. I removed the lady that was in sketchup and tried exporting with rubytmix. Then I imported it into trainz cmp. The CMP says it is unable to read config file. So I tried creating a new asset in content creator plus and saved the M8 mesh file there, and it still showed up as faulty. I am sorry for all of this confusion.

No problem, I think I can help you with that, but you'll have to re-create the config by scratch (unfortunately in CMP) then copy almost all the mesh (DO NOT COPY the 'exported' config.txt, that's was having you trouble with the faulty config error). Then confirm it, that's it. Trust me, I've done help making the export to trainz couple of times and also to help with droichi21's content.

Great news everyone. I'd say the Metro North M8 is almost complete. I finally got the M8 into Trainz, thanks to the the help and advice of Acelejalde, Mikey186, Scottbe8, Jeffmorris, Drchoi21 and BStyles. I now know how to properly use the RubyTmix exporter to export things into Trainz. For now, the M8 is just a scenery item on display inside Penn Station. Hopefully, M8's will be seen at Penn Station in the future. Google Sketchup reported that the M8 has over 25000 polygons and may cause low frame rates in trainz, but I am getting around 145 frames per second with the M8 in Penn Station. Instead of having translucent windows, I may take the approach the Drchoi21 took with his Arrow III's, which was to paint them in a dark grey color. I say that because who wants to see an empty interior? Now that the M8 is now a scenery item, can someone please help me set this up as a locomotive or piece of rolling stock. I would soon like to add bogeys (Built in M7 bogey), Leslie RS2M horn, pantographs, and headlights. Since the M8 is almost finished, I was wondering if somebody could make an engine sound for the Kawasaki M8's. How can I easily reduce the amount of polygons in the M8? Below is a picture of the Metro North M8 in trainz as a scenery item in Penn Station. What does everyone think?

LOL, I know that has a lot of polys, because when I scrolled over it my browser FPS dropped...
:D
Seriously though, it looks good, but with a high poly count my 2011 MacBook might not handle it that well, 1 or 2 would be fine, but still...

Keep up the good work! :)
