Just So We're Clear on Support Time Frame

I figure I will get better, quicker responses here and it probably is listed someplace but I can't find it, so I will ask here.

By purchasing a newer version (I have the feeling my GF wants to buy me TS2010 Engineer's Ed for Christmas, as she has suddenly started talking about it), what kind and how long will I have access to the DLS? Does this require a 1st Class Ticket as well? Or will I have access for at least a year or more?

My GF wants to make sure I have no major issues if she buys this for me like what was going on yesterday. Because I have heard good reviews, I am not against having the more current version, but like I said, she wants to be sure.

Also, while I realize N3V/Auran does not support it on laptops, if 2004 works on my laptop, does this mean 2010 will have a good chance of running on it as well? (I have an ATI Radeon Mobility discreet graphics card)

Any input in this area is solicited and appreciated.

you youwill have acess to the d/l station, ifi was you i would buy a fct. if she si goingto get you 10, i would buy it from the online auran store, but the disk and it will get shiped to you in a few weeks,, i live in ky. and it took me three weeks to get it,,,

Get the boxed set, either off auran or I've seen that jointed rail sell it also. Make sure its from "N3V games"only, not "just trains" or any other outlet.
Reason being you can't patch the others at the moment.
If your laptop will run 2010, I wouldn't like to comment.

Trainz 2009 is the newest version for which a support deadline has been announced, and that deadline is Q4 2014. It is therefore reasonable to assume that, assuming newer versions are released, TS2010 will be supported for DLS access until around Q4 2015.

So, 5 years worth of support or so, seems pretty fair.

Of course, if you find yourself using trainz much, you're almost guaranteed to end up wanting a FCT anyway, since it makes things so much easier and faster, for a fairly small investment.

Native mode TS2010 uses less resources than TRS2004 so if you are happy with the performance today it should be OK. Note that many content creators have raised their standards and poly counts for TS2010 so their content can be much demanding.

Translation choose your content carefully and it will work.

To amplify other's statements:

You have access to the DLS at least until whenever Auran announces discontinuance. As NikkiA pointed out, that's quite a few years' worth of access even without an FCT.

I bought a 1-year FCT for I think what came out to $25 U.S. I got a voucher not long after for lifetime access for what would have been something like $130 U.S. though I did not take it. I do recommend a FCT and odds are good you will end up wanting one if for no other reason than convenience.

I bought the boxed set as I prefer physical media. I pre-ordered it but received it about 3 weeks after release. I've heard several horror stories of shipments taking far longer but AFAIK the shipments were coming from Australia and were outside the holiday season.

Stay away from third-party resellers like Steam, Just Trains, etc. In addition to patching issues they add in more DRM/copy protection, which means that much more hassle. It's best Trainz run on a machine with as little going on in the background as possible.

Which brings me to the final point. If indeed your graphics card is discrete then you should do well with TS2010. Until recently I ran it on a minimum-spec machine (albeit without anti-virus and other unnecessary background processes running) and it ran nicely.

I have the Just Trains version and I *seem* to have patched it using the path downloads from here. I can only say seem because I'm having problems which I thought the latest patches were supposed to solve, so perhaps there is some sort of issue, but the process itself worked fine.

Hi Qballrail And Everybody.

By purchasing a newer version (I have the feeling my GF wants to buy me TS2010 Engineer's Ed for Christmas, as she has suddenly started talking about it)

Just a bit of advice based on experience. As your Gf is planning, my wife bought me Trainz 2010 for Christmas last year. My daughter and her downloaded it late Christmas Eve so it really did make it a very special present for me on Christmas morning.

They had no problems with the download although it did take several hours but it did go without any hitches whatsoever and also installed with no problem.

However, Auran and the helpdesk did shut down for close to a fortnight last year and I assume it will be the same this year. The forum was still open and it became apparent on there that quite a number of people did have problems with the download or installation during that period and were not getting any responses from the helpdesk whatsoever.

So, it is great to have the latest version of Trainz downloaded to your computer on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or in days between there and new year, but bear in mind that based on last year if anything goes wrong you can be very much on your own until the Auran staff sober up, Chuck the turkey bones out and gets back from there Christmas festivities to perhaps at some time get round to looking at your problem .

having said all the above, as with me and I'm sure many thousands of others the download went perfectly and it could be very much the same for you. but I thought I would give you the information to help your gf judge the best way to get her prized gift to you

Hope this helps your gf in balancing the best way do that
Bill

The only certainty we have in life is death and paying tax.

If you buy the download version direct from N3V (Auran's new name) do remember to declare the purchase on your annual tax return otherwise its uncertain if you will pay the correct amount of sales tax on your purchase.

Hi John,

We don't pay taxes on downloaded software from other countries. The only time we pay is when the company has a shipping point within the state where we live.

How long this condition remains true is unknown at this time because our lovely congress is looking into ways to change this.

Hi Everybody.
It has always been stated in Britain that tax is what we pay for a civilized society. However, anyone reading the British newspapers these days will without doubt come to the conclusion that Britain is no longer a civilized society.

Therefore this year I have put the above quote on my tax return with the comment "I feel I need pay no tax to the British government whatsoever".

Good one, Bill. Maybe I'll put this same on mine as well. :) Wouldn't the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) like that. ;)
