It had to happen - driverless trains.

The Dockland's light railway in the east of London has been using driverless passenger trains sine 1987. True, they are not heavy freight rolling stock, and the permanent way was constructed specially, but they are running a regular service each day.
It's quite fascinating to stand at the front end and "pretend" to drive!

Colin

Probably because all their drivers are getting too bored of the route; loader, desert desert desert, port, desert desert desert, loader...

from what I am lead to believe, the drivers on the ore trains are, soon to be were - amongst the highest paid in the world.
Loader _ desert _ port _ desert _ loader, who cares if the price is right....right?

The Express Tram at Detroit Metro Airport is also driverless. It's fun to stand in the front and watch the other tram come at you like it's gonna crash into you then divert at the last second. :D

Don't forget the Detroit People Mover downtown. Actually uses linear induction motors instead of conventional rotary motors geared to the wheels. Crazy sharp curves and acceleration!

This project has been covered in the Australian Railway press for over two years now since they first stated this was there aim to have driverless operations.
