Is TS2010 worth it?

I see people are happy about it but my question being, seeing that to me the speed trees are a pain & only routes i want to be useing are the NYC water level route when it's done, Roon's RBM&N when it's done, including the soon to be 1950's back dated version, & My own coustum Ulster & Delaware project. I quite like what they've all done with there routes & What i plan to do with mine so i want to ask will these routes even work in TS2010, whats this about layers in survyer? & Will older types of trees work?

I have found a few bugs in Trainz 2010, including tunnel portals that don't remember anything and fail to produce trains in driver, chunks of land that randomly disappear, silver speckled land on the horizon and commands in surveyor that don't show up in driver, layers for me is a pain, one of the main reasons I left Railsim/railworks, now it's arrived in Trainz 2010.

I have deleted Trainz 2010 until hopefully some new service packs arrive, I'm thinking about re-installing Trainz 2009 as it doesn't have layers, so I can easily build routes without faffing around, wondering on what layer I placed an object in. The unfortunate thing is, in Trainz 2009, I have a problem with silver land, (this thread can be found in screenshots under why I deleted trainz 2009). However hopefully soon, Auran might have a new service pack that corrects this problem.

I bought Trainz 2010 for Speedtree as I am a fan of this feature and the East Coast Mainline, don't get me wrong Trainz 2010 is a great program with a few annoying bugs thrown in, if you don't mind the layers feature, then trainz 2010 has a lot to offer.

Hope this helps

The two things I highlighted in bold look to me like the result of trying to re-edit a route rather then edit the session. Portal info as well as what driver commands are available would be Session info. To edit the session do this:
1. From the routes screen, click the route once to select it. (If it's already selected, see 2.)
2. Click the route again and the screen will change to the session list.
3. Click Edit Session on the left. (Default layer will be Session but can be changed via the layers tab.)

After installation of the Service Pack, and checking the ant-alias box in the options I find that most of my older content shows up in Native mode correctly, so I can now use most of the older trees instead of SpeedTree.
It also runs a lot smoother than TS2009 in this mode on my systems.
Is it worth it? Yes, more so now that some of the quirks are being ironed out.

I'm running 2010 with all of the current SP's installed and it works great. I've built a layout without the layer thing and have no problems. If you have a high end pc or updated your current one you should be good to go. Don't give up on 2010. It's a good version.

To my eyes, the graphics on 2010 are a major improvement over 2009. I DID have problems with video effects until I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver and started using Open GL. My only regret is how much equipment does not show up in TS2010 and has to be run in compatibility mode to be seen. That mode will cause a jumpier picture and reduced clarity on the graphics.

Right now, I'm keeping 2010 "clean" and using 2009 in compatibility mode.

As far as the layers go, I've found some success in making sure all my work is done on the session layer, but not sure if this is messing up something else..... Oh, the trees..........they look really cool, but every time I get some down my route won't save correctly, it will only give me the option to vreate a new route and wipes out my old one - a whole year of work. Thank God for backup cdps. The only way to fix it is an extended database repair. Anybody have any input on something I may be doing wrong??

I've noticed that glitch a few times, seems to be related to editing a route that has existing sessions - since some changes to the route affect AI traffic it wants to save a new route and session instead of overwriting the original route and screwing up the AI. That's just a guess at the moment, I haven't done extensive testing on it. Whenever I merge two routes I always merge the route layers, and I try to keep session editing and route editing separate so I never do both at the same time.

As for the trees, I'm still fiddling with the best kind to use. My system don't like the new speedtrees at all, they really tank the framerates, so I'm experimenting with older trees to find the best combination of appearance and framerates.

I've just installed 2010. I installed it over top of my existing 2009 install. (I hope I don't end up regretting this) It seemed to install and work, give or take some patching and restarting, but all my old content seems to be there.

I'm running in compatibility mode because I seem to like alot of the old switching routes. It would be really great if the routes themselves had a flag for compatibility mode, so that the correct mode for each route would get automatically chosen.

I've only played for a couple of hours, but it seems to work...

I installed 2010 last weekend after putting it off for months due to all the reports I have been reading in these forums about problems upgrading from 2009 etc, etc. Now I wish that I had not waited.

I agree with Johnda1237 that the graphics are an improvement. I also feel (without any objective test) that there has been an improvement in the speed as well.

As for gaugetamper's question "whats this about layers in survyer?" - layers have opened up a whole new world for Trainz route developers and may be the single best improvement since the development of active industries in Trainz 2004. I know nothing (Sgt Shultz's famous defence:hehe: ) about airtime's problems with layers in Railsim/Railworks but suspect that it may have more to do with the "reputation" of those simulators than the concept/idea of layers themselves.

To me the layers is a big improvement, especially when building large & complex stations. No more "hunt the spline". Station's can be built in stages, half completed parts can be locked, added too then merged until completion.
