Is Trainz 2012 appropriate for a beginner?

I'd be a bit weary as well. Luckily, the forum community here (including myself) can help out with the majority of issues (apart from account/serial number issues, which the Helpdesk deal with)

I'd be a bit weary as well.

Well, "weary" would indicate the strain and stress of helping others with their problems...a noble cause!

"Leary" however, would indicate our mutual lack of enthusiasm for a beginning user to adopt Trainz 12!:p

Probably. The biggest issue I can see is if a Trainz 12 user wants to download older content, which may depend on built-in content that is not in Trainz 12. It's OK for users who want to drive one of the built-in routes, but not so good for those who may want to create their own.

I think that this difficult view of TS12 is more in the perception of those who have experienced the many previous versions. Because of the wide variety of possible activities, a new TS12 user might stumble over these dependency issues the first day or not see one for a long time if ever.

A warning of what might happen is polite but it shouldn't be done to scare them either. This is not a canned game where every move is predetermined. Tinkering is part of the package. By inviting and embracing user input, we get the good with the not so good.

Of course TS12 is suitable for a beginner. I'm a beginner and I use TS12. I'm not saying it's easy, far from it, but there's no need to shy away from it. You can't break anything and you'll learn as you go along.

Nickie,

Another good point too. You can't break anything. At least there's no plaster and glue to mess up an expensive model, or worse, watch that very expensive N-scale locomotive drop to the floor from the trainboard. I did that about 8 years ago and that was the end of modeling for me. I now Trainz instead. It's so much cleaner, safer (for the models), and it's a great way to build the layout of my dreams without needing a football stadium to do it in.

Yes it is suitable for the beginner but PLEASE... PLEASE READ the included MANUAL at least 2-3 times like a book or like a bible! I wasted many times & experienced on my own if your're only learn the driving controls, that's not enough.. TS12 is more complicated than that. A pure gem for railroad fans.

True. I only read the Driver parts of the manual at first and thought that would be enough for simple driving. Only partly true. Recently I discovered, that I had completely misunderstood the concept of "priority". So, back to the manual and read the Surveyor parts as well.

On my very first non-tutorial session the consist ended up on the bottom of a river. Now, think what that would have looked like, if it had been a model train.

Hi,

I don't understand that rubbish about beginners. Ts 2012 is not more difficult to operate than any previous version. The opposite is true, as most of the bugs contained in older versions have been eliminated.

By the way, when I first bought Ts 2012 I installed it on my old computer alongside with 2010. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that 2012 was running much better than 2010. Since then I got a new computer, where I have only 04 and 2012 installed.

The only problem is, that most of the content on the DLS and even inbuilt content was built to older specifications and therefore not optimal for use with 2012. This is, however, not the fault of 2012, but the inevitable consequence of the improvments attained over, say 04.

Problems due to inadequate content could be considerably reduced if users would be more conscious of the quality of the content they are downloading. As long as users are downloading following the motto: better bad content than no content at all, problems are bound to surface.

Cheers,

Konni
