Is train "driver" an accurate description?

One of the features of language is that it tends to lag current usage and preserve original terms for things and occupations. We still go sailing when traveling in water craft even if the main means of propulsion has no a sail. We might dial a phone number but the last time I saw a rotary dial on a telephone was in a museum. Do cow-catchers still catch cows?

Consider yourself lucky ... They could have named them: Ingenieur, or Treiber, or Zugbetreiber, or Lokomotivingenieur, or Eisenbahningenieur, or Eisenbahnbetreiber, or Schienennetzbetreiber, or Lokführer, or Dirigent
