Is it possible to have semi-random engine/rolling stock combinations in TS2009 SP4?

I know this may be a strange question for me to ask, so here goes...

As I am modelling the WCML (as well as other branchlines, but not in a lot of detail, and as some UK users know, the freight (container trains especially) are done using various classes and companies.

Here is an example or two:

Class 66,70,86,90 or 92 + container train

As some will know, there are several companies who run intermodals (container trains)

Class 66 or 92 + departmental train (cars, cargowaggons etc)

Similar thing with ballast trains. Can be a 66 or 70 hauling them.

Is it possible to implement these scenarios in a portal, where it could be say a 92 on a container train, or a 66 (I know there is not any Class 70s in Trainz at the moment) doing say a departmental train. Ideally I do not really want to have to set each possible combination up if possible.

I'll go for a no, you need to set them up in the portal.
I go for setting the various consists up in surveyor and saving the whole consist. Then at the portal you can add your chosen loco.
What I would try is using (I think jointed rails) instant load random products as the first command, so each train is not identical.

Fair enough - I was thinking it would be a good feature in Trainz to be able to have seperate randomness for the locomotive and the rolling stock.

(There used to be such a feature by Tafweb for TRS2004, but it does not work in later versions)

There's the emit train rule, with that you can send what you want when you want. I use it when I need extra stock or a spare loco.

I'll have a look into that one.

As it's nearly my bedtime, it will be tomorrow now when I get a look.

Any further suggestions are welcome.

Sounds good. Is it limited to single wagons or does it allow for say 20 of the same wagon (like the WCML)?

Shane
Select the wagon from the list and just keep clicking the add button, there's a counter which tells you how many vehicles.
Or you can pre select which vehicles+locos you will use (in surveyor) and only those will be available. Otherwise the whole list shows.

What I generally do is create a template session with a schedule library that has assorted schedules, make a backup of that since creating the schedules is the most tedious part of the whole process. Then I open that session and Save As before doing anything else.

Assemble assorted trains in a yard, use the pick tool to Get Consist, give each different consist a name. I have the filter set for My Content so I don't have to sort through all the default consists, I keep meaning to disable those and keep forgetting. :hehe:

Next step is add new consist, and instead of fiddling around to assemble a train in here I just click Add an existing saved consist and pick one of my premade consists.

Add a driver, then give him a Wait for 5 seconds command, then Copy Commands, Insert, from Library. I toss in another Wait for 5 seconds between each additional schedule just to make sure they don't drop the ball if the program gets the hiccups while it's loading.

So far I've been giving all the different random trains spawned from the same portal the same schedule, eventually I'll experiment with giving them different schedules and destinations to see how screwy THAT gets.

Hi Shane

The SCS2006 rule contains a command to add random consists of variable type and numbers of vehicles. I group steam locos under their power classifications so a train requiring a class 7 loco will select the loco from a Royal Scot, Rebuilt Patriot, Rebuilt Jubilee or Britannia to haul it. With diesel hauled trains I have been able to simulate engine failure with an occasional steam engine appearing on what should normally be a diesel turn.

Similarly random freight trains can be created by giving the command a consist of different vehicles to choose from and a maximum and minimum number of vehicles.

No two runs of the scenario are ever the same which helps to stop them getting stale. It may not be what your looking for but it will do everything that you have described with ease.

Regards

Brian

All suggestions so far sound good to me. I will have a look into them once I'm next on Trainz (later on today hopefully)
